As an avid snorkeler, I have swam with countless barracuda. There have been some monsters fish 5+ feet, but have never been threatened, or even ever seen them aggressive. I did have one swimming beside me about 3 feet away, did not know he was there till I turned my head. That put some starch in my shorts.

While snorkeling at Pennekamp, we were moored on a reef snorkeling. My wife, daughter and I were swimming back to the boat. We looked down at the bottom, 8 feet below and there was an 8 foot bull shark taking up residency in the shadow of the boat. I have never seen my daughter and wife fly up the swim ladder so fast. I stayed in the water to take a couple of pictures, but sadly, they did not turn out well.

They are out there. If you consider all the people that are swimming at any given time, you will conclude that incidents happen so rarely that you should be cautious, not scared.

Ah, the memories ...

My friend caught a cat fish that apparently ate a human turd. We caught some catfish in the Guadalupe river below where all the people were partying.
My friend had it in his kayak floor. It wiggled under the seat and used it's top fin to hold it's position so my friend had to squeeze it to get a hold of it and get it out. We thought it was mud coming out at first but with that distinct smell it could only be human poop. We threw all the fish back and skipped our usual fish fry after the kayaking trip.
Hermit, in my youth when I was in the Navy, I used to make submarine patrols out of Rota, Spain. I remember seeing the water for the first time and telling someone how amazingly clear the water was and being warned not to get in the water as it was nasty. Later I noticed that the tender we were tied up to that when a toilet flushed it came out of a pipe on the side and there would always be a lot of thrashing and commotion in the water for a few seconds. And about 50 yards away would be some spainard fishing away. Never knew what species of fish we had around there, we just called them "Shit fish" due to their diet.

I remember my son hanging out at this one spot where the girls tended to lose their tops!!!!! A big thrill for a young man. I tended to hang out at the in the water bar. When we lived in Texas we went to the rivers in the hill country on a regular basis. San Marcos river is hard to beat on a hot day. The springs with the mermaids was fun too. "Aquarena Springs" and their diving pig.
Girls losing their tops! That's perverted. So where exactly is that spot so I can make sure not to go there? lol
When we were there a few weeks ago, we were floating down one of those lazy river type things and my wife thought I was slowing her down so she smacked "me" on the butt and said "let's go". It turned out to be a 15 year old boy. My wife has big fake boobs. I bet that kid never forgets that moment.
That water bar was nice. I wanted to get a season pass just to hang out at that bar and float in the wave pool.

Schlitterbahn Was Great

Kept looking for the spot where the girls loose their tops and for the chick with the big fake boobs to tap me and say "Lets go". Did not find either one.

Did find another great place to stop for a rest stop on the road. Bucc-ee's; they are speading south and east from the Houston area and are worth the stop.

The Shiner Brewery was a good stop as well. They only let you have four beers after the tour though.

If you think those fish are bad read about this

A buddy of mine who spent some time in central america and south america told me about a fish in the amazon that scares me enough to not even want to drink filtered water. Check out Candiru fish and report back what you find.
Happy swimming
Dave
