Would like some ideas on where to install the course computer and fluxgate compass on a 2007 Hunter 36. Rayamrine SmartPilot X-5. Pictures would be greatly appreciated if available.

1994 Hunter Vision 36 - We installed the course computer in the aft lazarette where our charger and battery switch reside. The fluxgate compass is in the bilge (about mid-ship). If I think about it I will shoot some photos this weekend.

PaulJ, Witzend and I just went through the fun of installing S1 APs and there is a long discussion of that on the 310 page. Fluxgate is easy, just poke a compass around your desired place and make sure it doesn't move. I mounted my fluxgate facing aft (there is an alignment feature to correct for that) on the blukhead just aft of my rear bunk (just under and aft of the wheel) and it is fine there. Raymarine recommends somewhere nead midship in the bilge so the Hunter guys can give you some better tips than I.

My H-36
I have the S-1 so you will not need to worry about rudder sensor but the fluxgat is in the middle rear compartment in the rear berth and the computer is in the outside bulkhead wall with access from the rear stern hatches,its right in the middle mounted on the bulkhead wall ,the wire enters into the console under the compass and comes down the port stainless pole down under the cockpit deck floor and into the the computer,a PVC pipe goes from the rear outside compartment into the circuit breaker panel for power cable.

Well done Seadaddler, I'm sure your your installation will work for me. Agree with Paulj, would like to see fluxgate, if you find the time to post them.

Raymarine suggest installing as close to midship as possible, have you had any problems with your system with the fluxgate being installed so far aft? Calibration, etc.

Just my 2 cents, but.....
...won't installing it aft delay it's reaction to the boat turning vs installing it midship or forward? On my H210 they installed it at the bottom of the forward side of the bulkhead that separates the salon from the forward stateroom. This puts it about 3 feet forward of the mast.

The compass location has nothing to do with reaction time, but has everything to do with stability. The closer to the center of axis the less movement due to wave action. Pick a place that has the least amount of metal to interfere with, check this location with a compass.
