cockpit drain hose

:cry: i have an o day 20. the cockpit drain goes through a fitting in the cockpit floor, makes two 90 degree turns and is connected to a through hull fitting. it does all this in only 12 inches of hose.

i have been unable to find a hose that can make the two 90 degree turns. a rubber auto heater hose will collapse in the 90s and a stiffer vinyl sanitation hose i purchase at a marina is to inflexible to make the turns.

i called rudy, he suggested a wire reinforced heater hose. unfortunately, it's a 1 inch inside diameter and after going to 5 autoparts stores, 3 home centers, and 2 marinas i have come up empty. i have search the internet for an hour and can't find any 1 inch inside diameter wire reinforced heater hose. i called rudy back but he had no further ideas. the hose is getting stiff and i would like to change it. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Why don't you do it the easy way? Pick up a 90 degree Nylon fitting and use a short piece of hose with two hose clamps where it goes into the top and use a straight hose with two clamps for the transom. You can get all this stuff at Lowe's. Buy the clear reinforced plastic hose. It worked on my 222. I don't see why it won't work on your boat. The easiest way to install it is to make up your hoses to the nylon fitting and mark it off so that everything fits. When you get ready to install it, use a stick about 2 1/2' long to push up on the fitting from the bilge floor. Make sure that someone is with you when you try to access that area from the lazarett hatch in case you get stuck. This would be a perfect time to install a deck plate on the center of your inside transom. The job will go a lot easier and safer with the deck plate.

unfortunately, the oday 20 is not set up the same. it drains just in front of the cabin entrance, makes a 90 apparently to clear the keel, then another 90 to drain through the bottom of the boat via a through metal hull fitting. there is only a couple inches drop between the ends of two fittings. i tried using two 90s last year but the line ended up runing up hill. i figured that would just clog so i reinstalled the old hose. it looks like they used a custom bent hose, but i have had no luck finding one with a 1 inch inside diameter nor can i find a wire reinforced heater hose in 1 in inside diameter.

I have followed your comments about locating the correct hose to solve your problem. You said you are looking for a "wire reinforced heater hose" to prevent collapsing.

In South Carolina we have a local company that custom makes or can get all kinds of hoses. You might email them with a diagram to include all measurements to see if they have a source:

You said original was custom made. This company has access to shops that make custom radiator hoses. Maybe they can make you one.

That's an odd set up. I don't know what to tell you about this one. I would have to see it. Maybe Ed's suggestion is the way to go. Good luck!

thanks everyone. i just found a section at a marina of 1" premium marine water hardwall hose which is wire reinforced. i got the last 18 inches they had. it worked, although not perfect. i still got a small kink at the first 90 but at least i don't have to worry about the hose giving out.
