I have always noticed that when you dingy over to your neighbors with a dagger in your mouth and a pirate flag flying from your boat that they tend to move. Anyone else notice those things?
I did get the opportunity to talk to the guy in the morning. He was pretty descent. He was telling me that he had just gotten the boat. Nothing big happened. No harm no foul. C'est la vie.

Yikes, you guys are SPOILED! Most anchorages here on the Wet Coast in summer, you're lucky if you're 50ft apart from your neighbours. AND with a depth of 40-50 ft, with 3:1 scope so you don't hit every boat in the bay when you swing. If you're not touching, you're not too close.
I have had "advice" from others when I anchored what they perceived to be "too close" (or sometimes hidden dangers), and I've always moved. If someone else anchors "too close" to me, I usually just "suck it up" and add some bumpers. Surprisingly, I've almost never touched another boat in an anchorage (and when I did, it was because it was dead calm and boats were pointed in every direction, drifting...)
If there is some current in the bay, you can adjust your position a bit with the rudder.

I don't have to worry about it, once everyone see's me trying to anchor they just all seem to pick up and leave anyway.
Of course, having a boat that draws less than 3' with the board up, gives me a lot more choices than others...

It is the same on shore. Why do people congregate? Why do people live so close together in apartments, condos, developments? I find most people want to be near other people.
Our night out Friday was great. We entered a known crowded harbor to find 1 other boat anchored. The wind was moving diagonally through the harbor so I picked a spot that both afforded privacy and decent swing room in a narrow harbor. A third boat came in that night and anchored well to the other side of the first boat. Perfect.
My wife and I live on 2 acres surrounded by forests and fields. No one is near enough that we would have to deal with. It is an ideal location for our need for privacy. Sometimes we get lucky and find the same holds true on the water. Most of the time not.
We also cruise for 2 weeks after school has started so as to minimize this problem but it still happens. I have been in a pristine harbor all alone and have other boats come and anchor right next to me. And then if you move, you get the "too good to be near us huh?".
Your best bet is to stay put, try and make friends and educate the person for future anchoring.
I have found out that if you are flying a jolly roger on the boat and you dingy to the other boat with a dagger in their teeth that they often leave the anchorage in haste. Why? I have no idea.
