Several days ago I posted a question about some lower shrouds which had pulled through from the base of the spreaders where they are attached. (See here: http://forums.catalina.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?p=626701#post626701). I decided a couple of days ago to call my insurance since if anything happened in the future that could in any way be connected, I wanted a record of this. Today the insurance sent a surveyor out and also somebody from Svensen's boat yard came out. It was a total mystery to them why this happened. However, the balls at the top of the shroud were too small, as were the cups that went underneath them. They were the same size as the old ones, though. The new ones were also a slightly different shape - deeper and less flat, meaning that less of it (only the very top part) rode on the spreader block. The rigger didn't want to go up the mast since it doesn't have the lower shrouds, so next week I will be taking the boat in to the yard, and he'll take a look from the crane.

I will let you know what is the final verdict whenever I find out myself.

given the age of your boat it could be a mixed bag of parts by now. Hope you get it sorted out.

I can say from personal experience that I have used the Alameda WM rigging shop for standing rigging and had great service. I provided a cut list of parts and configuration. I upsized the ends from the stock dimensions with the same size wire. The parts were pulled and discussed before any $$$ numbers. The quote was fine, I signed my name to it and the work was on the money. Much better than the ready made set I got from DR Marine which had bannana shaped swages. The employees are younger than me but not a problem. I took my time to vet the process and ensure my own satisfaction.

WM has four rigging locations in retail stores, Seattle Alameda San Diego and Annapolis.

I also talked with WM today. They say they will replace the rigging. This is despite the fact that the problems were partly not their fault. Lots of people, myself included, complain about WM's prices. However, I have to say that their return policy and this sort of thing is above and beyond the call of duty.

John, that's always been a common thread

when discussing WM- the prices are too high, but they stand behind whatever they sell, have the best return policy around, and go whatever distance to satisfy the customer.

maybe we should say all the good things about them first....

By the way, I not ashamed to say I like McDonalds, too!
