I wouldn't be too concerned.
As soon as the first politician gets lost 'cause his car "GPS" gets lost, he'll hold congressional hearings and .......
O.. M .. G ... where are my paper charts ? ?

GPS - Why not fire up the LORAN

Guess it's time for everyone to go into the garage and get out the old Loran, and set up the antenna.

Is anyone using these anymore - or only me?

Loran is being shut down to save money by the current Admin

I bet 50 buck you will not see a major outage of GPS. This is a post from some unknown UK source. I don't want to be rude but it seems worthless.

I have complete trust in the US Coast Guard and US air Force. Can GPS fail? Yes, but I worry more about solar flares than maintenance issues.

You should depend on GPS any way. You should know how to do a DR plot and advanced coastal navigation. Almost anyone can plot using GPS but we are sailors.

This is a Brittish report but it is just the way government conducts business. They'll leak out their concerns to gain the public's interest so that when the spending bill comes through it will find light opposition. With a war in Afghanistan, one in Iraq and a fleet of warships around the globe I would not worry about the GPS system going down.

Actually, I read a few weeks ago that financial support for LORAN is being eliminated.

So, dig a little deeper in the garage and get out the sextant. :)

loran might go but the gps system is made for navy army air force and other govt organizations--i doubt it is going anywhere

The GPS constellation was supposed to be replaced every 10 yrs. It was working so well that replacement seemed an overkill, until 2 of them failed in late 2005 early 2006. They were able to restart the clocks, but eventually they'll fail.
I believe they have to have their clocks working in order to know where they are, and tell your GPS where it is.

A new set of satellites is being sent up, and old GPS sets do not recognize them. Latest one went up March 24.
