Never done this one

Never done much sailing on the left coast, but from what I hear, anything heading north is no fun. Seems like every time I read a report on heading that direction, it always contains the word bash, at least once, usually more. Keep us informed, and lots of pics.

C 42 is a nice boat though. I would love to get my hands on the two cabin layout c-24 someday. I don't like the layout of the three cabin layout

only meant to provide an "alternative" route, with as many "fallbacks" as possible for others considering it. a friend is coming south in June, and he's also read this material so he knows what his options are. never know when th weather can pick up...

Blue Water in a Catalina 42. I guess that the boat is okay for that. I think that I would much rather be in a heavy displacement cutter rigged boat.

I saw somebody on Craig's List (SF area) trying to get back in touch with a guy with a C42 about sailing it up to Seattle. I assume it was the same guy. Maybe he's just changed his plans.

Stu - really interesting read about Benson's trip

Looks like he did an extremely thorough job ducking into every nook coming up the coast. Judging by his writing in the link it appears he intended to write the book.

I've done a little research about coming up the coast myself but never came across as many possible anchorages as he did. I've read the Douglas book and basically his book is more or less a regurgitation of Sailing Directions with a few pictures and some stuffing, and besides, he didn't actually go into many of the anchorages he talked about but instead got info from others. One person in our marina used his Alaska book and almost sank their Beneteau 42 or 43 because Douglas put the rock on the wrong side of the inlet. That's scary!

Based on your Benson link I think his book deserves some checking out. Thanks for taking the time to provide the link.

Last year a fellow I talked to a number of times helped crew a Nauticat 35 or 36 down the coast from Seattle and they lost it somewhere around Crescent City, give or take a few degrees. The Coast Guard rescued them in the nick of time. Like what happens so many times, they launched their life raft only to have it blow away before they could get in it. There is a short story he wrote in 48 North about his experience.

It's a tough coast and that's one reason the Northwest was one of the last places on earth to be explored.

Yep...that is why I will stick to the East Coast. Chesapeake Bay is perfect for me and if I want to go up or down the coast I will just jump into the ditch.
