Two boat dilemma

About 18 years ago (hard to believe) I bought a 74 Oday Mariiner for a good price..I repaired the delaminated fiberglass on the stern and the non-running outboard..sailed it on Lake Michigan and a few local lakes for 13 years. After my financial circumstances improved, I stepped up in boat size but I kept the Mariner. Make a long story short, I've got a bigger boat, but I still have the Mariner.
Every spring I think about selling it, but I still feel attached to it. I'm even thinking about cleaning it up and taking out again. :D

Anyone else have this attachment to old boats that they should have unloaded but keep them around for sentimental or whatever reasons?

BTDT. I did mange to part with my restored 1955 Rhodes 18 last year but I am holding onto my 1963 Cape Dory 10.

Your Cape Dory is a beauty, Tim!..
It is cars that I have a problem with.. My '71 Alfa Romeo GTV stayed here MUCH longer than it should have! I finally was able to sell it when I knew it was going to a better home!
I did own two boats for a while, but not on purpose! I was paying slip rental on both and that sort of ate the sentimental attachment.

About 18 years ago (hard to believe) I got a mistress for a good maintenance price..I repaired the delaminated stern and the non-running stuff.. we travelled on Lake Michigan and a few local lakes for 13 years. After my financial circumstances improved, I stepped up in woman size but I kept the Mistress. Make a long story short, I've got a bigger woman, but I still have the Mistress.

Ken - its OK to have two boats (women). Just be sure that they never meet or find out about one another or you'll have trouble than you can handle.

Claude, it used to be cars for me as well. 1968 Triumph GT6, 1969 Spitfire(road racer), 1977 Spitfire and a 1980 TR8. And then on to Audis. I am waiting for the perfect TR250 to come along although I have always loved the AR GTV. A friend of mine used to race one. A real sleeper. Have you ever seen a Triumph Italia? It is a very rare 2 door sedan only which about 50 were produced. I was parked next to one at a car show in NJ years ago and of course my wife fell in love with it.

BTW, the first time I saw my wife cry was the day I sold the '77 Spitfire.

Ken, my wife also cried the day the Rhodes was sold.

Ken, I had a 67 Rhodes 19 which I absolutely loved. I wish I had kept it. It would be nice to take a break from working on my old Morgan 41 OI some weekend to do some real sailing again ;-)

We had one of those in the '70's and I regret its loss to this day. It was a wonderful boat. It is no mystery to me why you're holding on to yours!

Do you guys like punishment

WOW, for those of you who like the old English stuff. You must be a glutton for punishment. As they say hindsight is 20/20. Looking back I wonder how in the hell I could ever enjoy owning something that constantly dripped oil, was at times impossible to start, and it was when and not if the Lucas electrics would crap out. My affliction was mostly of the two wheeled type. Ariel square four, Triumph TT special, Velocete, AJS and Matchless singles. I relish the memories, but do not miss a single one of them. Although, if I still had the Ariel and the Velocette, I could probably improve my lifestyle quite a bit.

MAN.. ! Tim .. you are afflicted as badly as I am.. Sorry… Mine were ’59 jag, XK 150 roadster (not drophead coupe) ‘’64 MGB roadster.. MG 1100 four door sedan, one of the first transverse engine FWD cars.. hydrolastic suspension, interconnected.. weird!. I have lots of experience messing with SU carbs and Lucas electrics.. Must be why I find maintaining boats a pleasure!
Phil, Those were some nice scooters!. I have been partial to Hondas and BMW’s but used to work on a friend’s Norton Commando and another buddy’s Vincent .. Yup.. Back then he had brought it with him (air force) from the UK and we kept it in a dorm room back in ’66. No way of knowing what that thing was going to be worth .. Amazing machines.

Two boats just fine

Back in 1964 I purchased an O'Day Daysailer. I sailed it off and on through the years. Always stored it inside. Have had several other boats over the years but kept the Daysailer.
I am now 71 and about to sell my O'Day 23 and retire from active ownership. That will leave me with the Daysailer - which is older than my children. It is in great shape. A few years ago when I was launching it someone on the ramp asked me how I liked my new boat. Never be ashamed of keeping a great old boat!

Why is it a dilemma?

I was given a derelict Pearson Triton. She moved into my back yard. My father was given a Glanders 23. She moved into my back yard. This spring I got the chance to get another less than perfect Pearson Triton. She's in the water in Annapolis. We are all one big, happy family.

By the way, my first car was a 1975 TR6. I didn't get to keep her when I got another car. Maybe that's what I'm making up for now... hmmmmm.
