Cool diamond foam sanding blocks.

this might not be new to you guys, but i found these foam sanding blocks at work. I work on the new boeing 787 carbon fiber dreamliner, and the mechanics use them to sand on the composite.

they are molded foam with a pad of diamond sandpaper securely fastened. they sand like crazy. no clog. they are amazing! ive used them on wood, plastic, fiberglass, etc. the ones ive been using for about 3 months are just as good as the day i got the out of the trash.

I can get them all day long, b/c the mechanics can only use them once and gotta throw them away, but they are like brand new!

they are made by a company called Amplex flexible diamond products. i got course and fine.

i had about 8 of them on the boat today, and after my post i decided to show them to the boatyard guys (hangin out drinkin beer). they each wanted one! only got 2 left so i gotta load up wednesday.

obviously, i dont wanna make a job out of running to the post office w sanding blocks everyday, but u and a few others have been quite helpful to me so i have no problem sending a few packages out!

glazing and lapidary suppliers have them. I've also seen them in industrial shop supply catalogs.

I just picked up the dremel multimax yesterday (knockoff of the fein). Anyway, they had pads to fit made of similar material. $35 for 2 pads I guess if they last a long time, it may be worth it, but that's getting into fein territory. Needless to say, I skipped that accessory.

Nope, not in the water yet. its been 16 months. Im ready, any thing i have left can be done in the water. Just cant figure out how to pay off this $6k bill I have accumulated. thats only $3k shy of what i paid for the boat!

All i really have left is wash & wax, & bottom paint. cant paint til im ready to launch. cant launch til i pay!

Ouch....That is a crazy bill. I couldn't imagine spending 6 K to put a boat in. Maybe you could negotiate with them some to get the bill down. That seems really steep.

One I idea that you could think of is to try to get someone to sponsor your boat and in turn put a sign on your mainsail. Just a thought but who knows if that would happen. It would make for good advertising for them! LOL

6k is a lot to come up with all at once. It would have been $375 each month if you would have paid on it since it got there. It would have taken a sacrifice, but how can you pay that now? The bill will only get worse. You are going to have to Dave Ramsey that thing! OR take a note out on it. How much is the yard storage compared to a slip? It may make more sense to take out a note against it.

yeah, im already dave rasey'ing my whole life. now i gotta attack the boat. im giving them $1k today, but like you say, the gill is gonna keep racking up. im am gonna try to haggle with them, but without a lump sum to tempt them with, I dont think it will work. Plus, gotta get a survey, insurance, and a slip. dont know how its gonna work out. 401k loan maybe?

what about taking a note on it? i thought about it, but i dont know how i would go about it. who is gonna lend on a 1986 boat? what requirements would they have? it probably wouldnt be a bad route, as its only $6k over a 2-3 year loan, and im gonna live aboard, so no i wouldnt have rent or other associated bills at home.

yeah, dave ramsey already told me to sell it. sorry dave, guess i aint gazelle intense. but i think this move will actually help my finances. living aboard will decrease my monthly bills drastically. slips in Charleston aint cheap though. minimum $12/ft up to $27/ft for the swanky marina.

I just noticed you were in my neck of the woods! Haggling after the fact is going to be a bit tougher than before the work was done. I'll try to think like DR. A note would be a no-no, but since you're going to live on it, you could treat it like rent. I think he usually says that if you go to a local bank or credit union you'll have better luck getting a loan. Where are you planning on living aboard? Oh, and the 401k loan is definitely a bad idea. I think the math works out to be a 40% penalty for early withdrawal, unless you're of age to get it out.

I can take a secured loan against my 401k for any reason, not a withdrawal, no penalty. just gotta pay it back with interest to myself. its still not a good idea, b/c the money stops earning. but better than getting a lean against the boat.

Penalties are one thing, I'm talking about taxes. Not only will you most likely have to pay taxes on the money you take out, but when you put money back in, it's probably money that's already been taxed. So, if I'm thinking right, you could potentially be paying double tax on the money. Back to the topic. What is the grit of the pads you're getting?

not sure of the grit. the blocks dont state the grit. they do have a part #, but im not at the boat at the moment. the coarser one has larger, farther spaced, "diamond spots". The finer one has tighter spaced, smaller diamond spots. in my opinion, either one would sand the $h!t out of anything. it feels like its all in the pressure you apply.
