Keith asked, "does anyone know if the toerails can leak into the cabin?"

I think that on the 26 they can. The toerails are just molded to their shape and not solid. Even if they have a little more filler at the top, it does not go all the way down.

Climb into the v-beth and reach up to the area under the anchor locker and then try to reach back to the toe raild. You just might find the groove. If you find a groove, then you have proven yours is not solid.

Also, on these boats, leaking rub rails is a bigger issue. At their age all the factory sealant/caulk is beyond its useful life. However, just resealing or recaulking often does not solve the issue on these boats.

I mentioned the other day how a yard owner solved this issue by epoxying over the whole rub rail.

Welcome to an production old boat. The old high dollar boats were thru bolted and not screwed like on our boats.

I searched, and found some articles on other boats, but not odays, except for a few discussions on where to get new rails. I couldn't find any info i need for reinstalling the rails. has anyone done this? Unless advised otherwise, i am going to try to plug all the holes at the bottome, fill with epoxy, drill, then seat them as i would any other through hull fixture, probably with 4200, Same for grab rails and slides. But any comments or prior experiences would be appreciated
I am going to go out and take some pix, and upload in a moment
thanks

You should be able to get the rails from Rudy.(drmarine.com). I made some up from ipe. I was able to make them from one piece of ipe deck plank. Time will tell how it conforms to the curve. I hope to install them in the next month.

Rub Rails? Darn, my list just keeps on getting longer and longer. I need to get off of this forum before I run out of paper. I was hoping I'd be in the water sometime next year. Rich

:D ha, no, not rubrails, TOE RAILS, rub rails is another thread
but they probably both need to be on both our lists. I am putting rubrail replacement off for another year. I hope........
I strained my back a little, so took "time off" from working directly on the boat to sand the teak that i have removed from the boat. that is a lot easier on my back than climbing up and down the ladder. And boy that teak sure looks good. I can't wait to put it back on

Keith,

On reinstalling toe rails, first there have been posts and posts with pictures. You just have to learn to scan all post for relevant information. If you do not fill current holes and have any extra holes, I guarentee leaks.

Rub rails have been spoken to on this forum and many other sailboating forums. There are several approaches, all required lots of work.

Grab rails also have a number of approaches and specific issues. The way grab rails attach to the cabin top apparently differers between boats. This especially true of 25's but I have seen one situation on a 26 where the shape and method of attachment to cabin top was very different from my
my boat. I would say it was done by a previous owner except that they were the same pieces as on some older 25's. Maybe they came from Rudy.

I could not locate quickly the little hole plugs that go inside the cabin on the ceiling. The size was not something I could get without buying a minimum of 100.

I went a different way. After I bolted the thru bolt to the inside of the cabin top, I attached a connecting bolt to the screw and then used that bolt as a way to attach grab rails inside the cabin. Last year I had to post pictures for a request about what I did. See attached picture.

I originally did this so my wife could have something to grab when we hit a power boat wake. It also allows movement in cabin in chop or rough water.
I find it helps getting up from sitting. It is far enough to the side so as not to be a bumping into issue.

I have also seen one 25 guy who justs leaves the holes open.

Shoaldrafter- nice idea on the inside grab rails. What are connecting bolts? I couldn't find last years thread you did on it.

connecting bolts?

There may be a more correct technical name. They are nothing more than long bolts that accept a screw from both sides. Unlike a turnbuckle, the screw is right thread both ways. On this project finding the correct screw size required going to dedicated nut and bolt supply. I could not get stainless steel in the size locally and was not interested in ordering a hundred piece box. I think that you need 14 pieces. The bolts are about 3/4 inch long. They fitted on the the over hang of the top grab rail screws. They accept a screw that goes from the wood rail thru a piece of pvc to the receiving bolt. Each pvc and screw should be sized to each spot. I believe most screws were about 2 1/2 inches long except for two which needed to be 1/4 inch longer. Most of the pvc pieces were the same, but doing so makes the wood rail bend to cabin top's curve. Even at that the distance between the receiving connecting nut and the rail varied a little bit.

I originally though that I would have to also screw the rail to bulk head and cabin wall. But the totol number of screws involved makes it quite stable without doing so.

It is also useful for going up and down stairs.

Re: Toe rails, rub rails and grab rails

thanks, and i will search again on toerails, but i didn't turn up anything before, maybe i didn't search rite, or maybe misspelled or something. i do always try to do a search before i start a new thread or topic. I don't do that out of goodness, just desperation, because it usually yeilds faster results!

I too want to do something for the grab rails on the inside. I thought about putting a backing plate that was a teak trim piece along the inside cabin liner and through bolt that,....but i would have to disasemble the grab riail, and use long bolts to go all the way though.

If i did it your way, i am curious, what did you use as those white, cylindrical extenders, and are you happy with the solidity/firmness of the interior grap rail?
