C-Flex is a system developed by Siemens for fiberglass construction. It was adapted to glassing wooden hulls. The process is as follows.
1. The hull is completely stripped of paint or coatings.
2. Any bad or marginal planks are replaced.
3. The hull is dried out completely. (In Oh Joy's case, 90 days)
4. The planks are refastened.
5. IBM 5200 is troweled on the entire hull area to be covered.
6. C-Flex rod matting is laid up and stapled to the planking with bronze or SS staples.
7. The matting is wetted in.
8. Another layer of C-Flex is laid up, stapled and wetted in.
9. The fairing compound is applied.
10. The hull is faired and then epoxy barrier coated.
This process is used in tropical areas to both preserve wooden boats and to protect them against borers. A C-Flex job for Oh Joy would run around 100K at today's prices. The use of 5200 and the staples provides both a chemical and physical adhesion. C-Flex rod mats can also expand and contract up to 300% making the material perfect for wooden boats. This prevents delamination found with other glassing methods over wood. It also makes for a very stiff and quiet boat.
