I want to put my six hp extralongshaft on outbrd bracket as spare...just bought boat with renault 8hp ...sailing on hudson and afraid of loosing power and being at the mercy of the tides...any thoughts....cheers frank

The small marine diesels found on small sailboats are relatively primitive beasts that even the French would have a hard time screwing up. Just remember, the engine is an AUXILIARY, and the sails are the PRIMARY source of motive power on a sailboat. A good anchor is also an important piece of safety gear.

Go for it! You would be surprised (or maybe not) how the little outboard can push the boat. I pushed a barnickled bottom 33 Morgan Outisland ( "free boat") with an 8hp high thrust 4 stroke and made 3.5-4kn with it depending on currents and wind. Its better than paddeling, or sittin still waiting for wind! You do understand that you will then have two maintainence nightmares to deal with instead of just one? Motors-I HATE THEM!!!!

Frank, an anchor, a good book and a fishing pole make waiting for the wind a pure pleasure.
Why Not
I don't see why not a outboard as a back up in case no wind or motor and you want to get back to the dock safe.
I would look for a special outboard bracket that can raise and lower the outboard,have seen them on some 25 ft sailboats.

all good responses and valued oppinions there for it all depends on how you us your boat. I sail often but not for extended periods so waiting it out or sailing back against the tide and wind though fun not always practical. I don't mind playing around with gagets (hence sailboat,lines,blocks,cleats,halyards,more lines,sails....) in fact I like it so if one motor is good two is beter. I will restore the llittle renault to its former pedestrian but valued self (they did power La Mans winners recently) as a matter of pride. So how come no one addressed the visual aspect of hanging a chunk of japanese pot metal on the stern?.....cheers frank
