Rotella 15W-40 is more readily available than the straight 30W even Wal*Mart stocks Rotella 15W-40. Personally I would opt for more frequent oil changes than converting a 20 year old engine to synthetic. Conversions of older engines to synthetic can sometimes result in seal leaks.. Rotella or Delo 400 are great diesel grade oils and both are available at your low priced high volume retailers..

Never had in oil leak in my old truck until I tried the "new improved" synthetic oil a few years back and three month later I was putting in a rear main oil seal. May be just my bad luck or coincidence ? ? I will let you decide but I will only use synthetic in a new engine from now on and synthetic oil is not cost effective on a sailboat engine in my opinion. I would stick with the straight 30 weight if available or Shell Rotella 15-40 as a second choice.

I use nothing but Rotella 15W40 in a Yanmar 3Gm, and the same in a 2QM Yanmar in previous boat. Have never had any kind of an oil related problem. I prefer the 15W 40 in older engines, but have no evidence other than success to back it up.

Do NOT use synthetic oil in an old engine. While the newer formulas may be better now many folks complain about leaks when you use synthetic in an older engine.
I don't know about your area of the country, but Rotella is much more difficult to find out here in the west. The most common oil is Chevron Delo400. This is what we have been using for over 20 years and it has served us well.
