Rolly Tasker 14'

Hi all,

First post here, hope I do it right.

I have what I think is a Rolly Tasker daysailer. I do know it's 14', fiberglass, round chined, has Rolly Tasker jib and main, and two removable covers in the floor that have Rolly Tasker imprinted on them. And, it's fun to sail. I bought it about 12 years ago, and was told it was probably 20-25 years old then. I was also told it was a Hong Kong Class, but I can't find any information on that.

It has traveling jib cam cleats. My problem is the port cleats have worn and won't hold the sheet any more. The base of the cleat assembly is marked FICO FG-168A. Does anyone know where I could find replacements? I've been able to find or make everything else I've need to sail, but these cams are stumping me.

The boat's been sitting for a while... freaks my wife out when sheet pops out and the jib smacks her, but the weather's turning nice, and I'd love to get out.

Also, if anybody knows anything about this boat, I'd love to hear it.

Now that you've got them removed, why not

take them into a West Marine store and see fi you can find matching pieces from a newer cam cleat and just replace them. Your unique mounting arrangement simply is not available commercially, and all you really need are the jaws.

Have you tried sharpening the teeth on them. I used a small triangular file on mine and it still works 2 yrs later.

Send them that picture and they can probably match it up... for cheap! I used to haunt that awesome store a few years back, I still drop by from time to time just to look around. I recall seeing those exact fittings there so there's a good chance they still have some.... good luck

I love that place. In fact that is where I bought the locking block that I had to file the teeth on.

You could also buy Spinlock PowerCleats to replace them. They make an adapter plate that is designed to fit many cam cleat setups...

I have never sailed on a Rolly Tasker 14' but it looks very similar to a 14' Viking day sailor I have that is from the 50's. My boat is probably a little more beamy but it is round chined like yours and is fun in moderate winds. When the wind and waves start to build it is not a boat I really want to be in as it can be a bit tender to the wind and does not have a fast hull speed (<= 4 knots) to begin with so waves can slow it down considerably. The advantage that my 14' day sailor has over other boats is that it is great for exploring coastal bays and harbors that are off limits to bigger boats - just pull up the centerboard a bit when you find the bottom.

You can and should try to see if you can find matching jaws for your cam cleats at a marine store. If you can't find a good match then be prepared to drill some new holes in that piece of stainless to mount a new cam cleat unit on. Trying to file the teeth on the existing jaws sharper also sounds worth a try.

I have tried West Marine, but the spring hook/stop on the bottom of the cams are the tough part to match.

Sharpening was the first thing I tried, but too much has worn away from the cam noses. I tried re-building with epoxy, wore off quickly.

Minnie's sounds like a good bet, and easy to get to through the ether from NC.

I have never seen any Spinlocks, but I'll check them out.

The base unit has welded posts that seat the cams. I could grind them off and mount a new unit with a big enough base.

And yes, squirrely winds and that round chine can make for an adventurous day on the water, according to the DW!
