Ok..next question... I have the Hunter 31 - have any of you replaced the winches with self-tailing winches? Seems like that would make life SO much easier! Let me know .... if you did, if it was a nightmare to replace them if or - worked out fine, or ...what... I'm a racer by nature. The standard non self tailing winches seem... more difficult/ not as nice to have...

When we traded up 3 years ago, our 'new' boat came with ST Lewmar winches. Night and Day compared to the old standard Barients on our Cal. A big question will be your budget. The ones you have now look pretty beefy and new ST versions of the proper size could easily set you back ~ $1000 each. As for replacing them, you might find new winches with the identical hole patterns as the old - just depends. What do you have now and what size?

There are a number of upgrades that really do make life, and sailing, a lot easier and more fun. In addition to roller furling, I count self-tailing winches near the top of the list. If well-placed, they make single-handling a breeze. I love them. I don't think their installation would be difficult at all. I would try to use as many of the existing holes as possible. I would fill the ones that may not fit the new winch base with either MarineTex or thickened epoxy. Drill some new holes, squirt in some caulk, make sure they are backed up strongly, tighten down the bolts, and then go sailing. If you are not in a hurry, there are some good winch deals on eBay fairly regularly.

Do yourself a favor. Check out Andersen winches. I take only two wraps and have never had them slip. I've used Lewmar, Harken, Maxwell and Barient on other peoples boats and it was rare that they did not slip.

self tailing winches, part deux

Well, upon closer inspection- the cabin top ones are not self- tailing..so those are the only two that would need replacing... I'll check those out! Thanks for the tip....
