Wow, what a wealth of knowledge

I did something this weekend that I should have done years ago. I joined a Yacht Club. Those old salts are invaluable with both their sailing knowledge and the fabrications they have done on their boats and trailers. Our club was having a regatta and after spending a few months trying to catch someone at the club we fianally succeded. They are not there much during the off season. I came by and met some people during last weekend's clean-up before the regatta and then this weekend I helped with the state Snipe races. I stayed around for their monthly meeting to put in my application and they made a motion to waive the 30 day grace period to have a club vote and voted us in. I have spent the whole weekend learning new things about my boat, trailer, and setting up some times to sail on some members boats with them.

If you have not joined a sailing club or yacht club, our experience has been great so far.

Yacht Clubs

They are an excellent source of local knowledge and can help increase your boating enjoyment a lot. It took us five years to join a YC because of my bias that it was a bunch of rich people and because, when my wife went to check one out, she was blown away by the jealous old biddies there. Later, we joined a smaller volunteer club which merged with a larger one some ten years later. When I retired and moved, three other YC members also moved to my area and we started a local YC which is very active and great fun notwithstanding the ocean is a hundred miles away. Good choice!

Yep, that's right

One of the first boats I got knocked down in was a Snipe. What a blast! Hopefully, you can find a way to file all they know away in your internal data bank and pull it out on demand.

There is an additional source of know how available in service organizations like the Coast Guard Aux, the US Sail and Power Squadrons, etc. that you can find in your community, while at the same time you are contributing to the safe education of others to make your use of the water safer.

Oh I agree, I spent a long time lurking and reading this site and searching the archives after joining. My post to reading ratio is hugely to the reading side. Many of the things I have done to my boat has been in at least due to the encouragement received from people here doing similar projects and posting about them. There is something to be said about having a person on the boat telling you an easier way to go about it.
