I have an old Venture 21 and I want to install a depth finder. First off, anyone have any recommendations? I don't want to spend a great deal of money on one. Also, what kind of transducer do you think is best? Can I use a shoot thru hull on this model? I like that method best just because I won't be going in really deep water, and it seems easiest. Thanks...

I installed an inexpensive Hummingbird fish finder (depth finder) on my 1971 Venture. I used the transducer furnished with the unit and placed it near the centerline of the boat just forward of the cockpit. Just be sure to use a removable binder and to push out all the voids. It works fine for me. In fact I just hooked it up to my boat battery after using double AA batteries for years.

I install a DF1000D Hawkeye Digital Depth Sounder that I purchased at West Marine for $100.00. It come with at transom mount or a in-hull mount transducer. I went with the in-hull and it has works great. I placed the trancducer centerline of the hull just below the v-berth and in front of the swing keel. Used quick set epoxy to mount it to the hull. Have had no problems.

Good Luck.

you can also test the placement with 'clay' sillyputty' plumbers putty, or silicone. )inside the hull)

key is no bubles in the putty. most then epoxy again, no bubles.

a cheap digital fish finder is what most use.. I have a hummingbird sx100. (< $100)

Mr. Bill is right on, I did mine with a pad of butyltape hasn't come loose in over a year and shoots bottom to over 600'. I was a bit skeptical but it works great. It was a hummingbird skimmer type transducer.

The previous owner of my V22 installed in the keel compartment. There is just enough room behind the keel. The cable then comes up through the top of that housing, which is normally above the water line. Works fine as far as I can tell, and have never had it kncked off yet.

I have a hummingbird and I am willing to sell it, as I am looking to upgrade. It has an inhull transducer, and a dual beam. I am thiniking of going with a combo unit, I am willing to off it fairly cheap, if you want to but. Name me a price nad I will calculate shipping to you. Thr in hull is the best.... No holes. I like the hummingbird, but I sail a large Bay in San Francisco, so having GPS is what I am looking for. I will send you everything for the right price. It is a great DS and FF, and there is nothing wrong with it, I just want to step up.

Send me a PM with your phone number, and we can talk about it.

I installed it in silicon with a long peice of dentaal floss. No voids, and if it stops working, I just go in and pull the floss back and forth to cut it out , and reapply. It hasn't failed in more than 4 years, so the floss is just sitting there. If nameaneh wants to buy mine, as I want to upgarade, all I have to to do is pull it back and forth, clean everthing up and ship it off, he will have a great depth sounder. mine even tells the surface temp Plus it has options he can buy to upgrade it. Barametric pressure, GPS attachment, and speed. It is all ready to go. I will take a reasonable offer+ shipping.

Where is the readout on these things. I mean, do you have to go in the cabin to see the depth?

No, I have my Depth Sounder on a swing arm, and I can see it from anywhere in the cockpit. Here is a photo

Thats what puzzles me. If you can see it from anywhere in the cockpit (thats the same as cabin, right?), then you have to get someone to monitor it from inside the cabin while you stand by the tilller?
I like the mounting, though

Re: location

It swings out and faces out toward the cockpit. The picture is while it is swung in for night or travel. The tan handle is a friction knob, and loosening it, allows it to swing out. I can't see a reason to have it monitored in the cabin. THe cabin is inside, and the cockpit it outside.

I hope that helps.

Re: location

And the bottom is underneath. Sorry I couldn't help myself .lol .That looks like a great setup, I just got a navman 5110 on ebay and plan on doing a similar install. Is there anyplace to hide the wires in that area and do you have an external antenna, if so where did you mount it?

Re: location

I don't have an external Antenna, it is built into the GPS. I got the swing arm at WM, but you might be able to find it at other marine stores. I have a plywood bulkhead that I ran the wires behind it. I try to hide all of my wires, because I have kids and they grab everything.
