The boat im restoring came with a Ankarolina installed in the anchor locker. i didnt know what it was until just now. its flat anchor line on a reel. says it can handle 6600lbs and is the equivalent of a 1" line.

Anybody got any experience with one?

Thanks

We have used an ANKAROLIA for years as we cruise the ICW and offshore. We have it on the stern anchor for the rode and, when we go offshore we disconnect it from the anchor and rig it around the mooring cleats as jack lines.

The only complaint we have is it will vibrate if there is a current running while using it as a rode and the vibration is transmitted to the boat. Because it is nylon it will stretch on deck when rigged as jack lines and it gets wet from rain or heavy due at night. Both are just minor nuisances. The best feature is it is out of the way when it is wound on the real and ready to drop the stearn anchor if the engine fails while waiting for a bridge.

This picture shows the line being used as jack lines as we are off shore and the real is half empty.

It is used a lot in Norway, Sweeden and Denmark. Practical and strong.

That reel looks half full to me;)

What is a jack line? Something used to hold the bimini?

Unfortunately, IIRC, the 6600 lbs. is the breaking strength of the webbing used in the Ankarolina. As such, it really isn't the strength of a 1" anchor line, which may have a working strength of 6600 lbs, but will have a breaking strength of considerably more, probably on the order of 30000 lbs. or so.

While it may suffice for a stern anchor line to stabilize the boat, you'd be crazy to use it as your primary rode, given that it is far more subject to chafe, and far weaker than the 1" rope rode that it puports to be able to take the place of.
