raymarine st-60 installation

just got a great deal on the st-60 plus value sytem to install on my H-30.

I already have the transducer from my Kenyon depth and speed that went south on me and wonder if the transducers are the same size in dia so to just remove the old ones and slide in the new ones for the st-60 system.

One of my depth transducers is a smart unit with NEMA output.

Does the st-60 recive NEMA inputs or Sea Talk or Both?

Not sure of the difference between seas talk and NEMA 183/2000.

I think you will find that SeaTalk is a proprietary system. They do make conversion boxes to go from NMEA to SeaTalk or SeaTalk to NMEA. (Raymarine E85001)

I would suggest that you get rid of your old transducers and install either the OEM depth & speed transducers or consider an Airmar combination speed & depth unit that is all in one. Chances are you will need to plug your existing transducer holes and drill a new one, but you will find out by taking a couple of measurements. If you get a removable transducer, keep in mind that you will need approx. twice the height of the tranducer to be able to R & R the unit for cleaning (IE: 4" transducer will require at least 8" of clearance above the transducer).

Hi Chuck
I believe you will find that while all your Ray equipment will work on SeaTalk it will not output NEMA. The way Raymarine has you set it up is you connect all Ray Marine equipment (power, ground, and signal on SeaTalk) and their GPS and the GPS "talks" to the NEMA data to/from other instruments.
You can't get NEMA unless you use a Ray GPS.
You can also get NEMA from your RAy autopilot.

This is one of those begin with the end in mind type of setups. If you have all Ray sensors then just SeaTalk them (you can't really avoid this BTW) together and you will get all the "shared data" features available. You don't need a GPS to get those but since position and SOG are two of the most important (true wind speed and direction, tidal set and drift, VMG,....all the interesting stuff) you will not be getting much without a Ray GPS.

Do you have an autopilot?

Chuck, You might talk to Raymarine and see if their Seatalk/MNEA interface will solve your problem but it might be as cheap to just buy a new transducer.

SeaTalk is a Raymarine's proprietary serial protocol. It is fairly close in specification to NMEA 0183, but not compatible due to slight differences in the sentence structure.

The ST60+ will not accept NMEA inputs, and you're probably better off just installing the transducers that came with the gear.

sailingdog is 100% on the mark.

On a side note, Chuck, I'm liioking for a Kenyon speed transducer. So if yours is still good, let me know. Thanx.
