How thick is the lexan??
3/16". I was going to go much thicker until I saw the fellow who cut them out bend a piece of scrap in half without it cracking. Their purpose is to take the impact of falling off a wave which isn't going to happen very often (I hope). Saving storage weight and space and having them able to flex and absorb some shock seemed like the way to go. Even if they get damaged, there is still a port underneath.

Another rough weather function is to keep someone from kicking a port while struggling with stuff on deck and breaking the dogs or hinges creating a distraction and discomfort.

I just went down and put the full set on the boat. It makes her look incredibly salty.

Great idea with a great result. Certainly smarter than my idea. I replaced all ten of mine with bronze NFMs with safety glass. Too embarrassed to mention the cost difference. One minor advantage though, two dogs instead of four or six screw-type knobs.

Actually, I hardly ever open more than one or two ports up here in Maine. The boat has two large opening skylights and the waters are cool.

I put the full set of port covers on in about 10 minutes. If cruising in conditions where they might be needed frequently, it wouldn't be too impractical to keep them on most of the ports full time. I didn't use materials with high UV resistance though since I plan for these to live mostly in a locker and maybe never see the light of day.

I'll put them on whenever venturing offshore except maybe for the one over the galley. I can screw that one on in moments if harsh conditions threaten.

Ah, yes, the beauty of sailing in Labrador current waters... no such luck on the southern side of Cape Cod. :)

Roger,

Did you make a couple of spares ? Or could you make a replacement with just a piece of plywood if in extremis ?
