wood boat question

I'm looking at this 35ft wood boat its in great shape no rot, I think it has somewhat of a wood keel, no inside motor, would a outboard push this thing?? also some of the bottom wood is visable through the chipped off paint(outside bottom) cant i just san, epoxy, and paint,,???and how long can i leave this thing in the water before the salt water eats through the bottom paint???

There has to be an awfully good reason for them trying to sell a 35 foot wooden boat for 2500 dollars . There may be no rot but how was she fastened? why was work started on the transom? how old is she ? what species is the framing and the planking? what is she ballasted with? Was there ever an auxillary engine? where is her rudder? tiller? Plumbing? electrical? Spars , wood or aluminum? standing rigging s.s. or galvanized? Turnbuckles or deadeyes? portlights, bronze?

what Ross said, which was a bunch. A wooden boat, IMHO, is a thing of beauty, but I don't want to own one. The work on a wooden boat is never done. Maintenance is tough enough on a plastic fantastic, but there is a pretty big multiplier in maintenance when you to to wood. I want to spend more time sailing, not more time working on it. Several years ago I looked at a really beautiful wooden boat, that the man had built, and then died. It was nearly new, very well built, and very pretty. It was also built with all block and tackle, and no winches. One person could in no way single hand the boat. And the family couldn't give it away.

If you have these questions about the boat this is not the boat for you. It seems like the marina is selling a boat that was abandoned at their premises. They are willing to drop the regular storage rate from $350 to $250. In 10 months they will have another $2,500. No, an outboard will not be adequate for a boat this size. Can you sail without an engine? Some cruisers do, but very few recreational sailors. The installation of a rudder will set you back some good money and if there is any rot on the hull get out your wallet. You would also need to understand that to maintain a wooden boat is very hard work and costly proposition.

wood boat hull maintenance

I'm pretty ignorant about wood boat maintenance. I do believe that wood is a valid choice to build in given age and condition of boats I have seen on the waters though.
What do you have to do to wood boat hulls (lets focus on hulls for now please) that you don't have to do to fiberglass?

I'd figure the bottom annual/biennial anti fouling painting would be common.
What are the common annual activities that wood boat hulls require?

Then it's not a wooden boat:)

Run, don't walk. Fiberglass boat prices are so depressed right now you can probably get someone to give you a boat in better condition that won't eat you alive after you own it.

I suspect that "custom work" was to cheaply eliminate by amputation a huge amount of rot in the area most prone to rotting in boats of that type. Rot is an infectious biological process. The seeds are probably everywhere in this poor old thing. I wouldn't accept that boat free without a budget of about 100 grand to go forward.

Do you have any idea of how much maintenance a 35' wooden boat is going to require. One that is this cheap has got to have some serious problems, and unless you're planning on doing a Slocum to the boat—stay away.

my brothers thank you all!!! I am handy but i dont want to spend 2009 working on a boat......

One last bit of advise, visit the wooden boat forum and read the archives about wooden boat repairs.

I'm glad you are convinced. A friend of mine, a boat surveyor believe it or not, bought a boat about like that and sunk over 100 grand into her. Last I heard, he was going to just walk away and abandon her at the marina to be sold to someone like you for $2500:)

Even being able to find the proper wood species is a chore. I am a very capable house carpenter but for anything beyond a dinghy I would hire help. I don't come cheap and I am certain that any wooden boat carpenter would know what his time was worth.
