Cushion cover question.

My V berths cushions are in a single piece and the berth is slightly asymetric so I can't turn the cushion over. I want to have it split into two lightly more managable pieces so I've got to use a different material for the new underside in order to have enough of the now unobtainable fabric left for the new side panels.

The berth bottom is a water tank top so I have had some problems with condensation and dampness from sleeper's sweat. I'm wondering what the best material for the bottom would be, something like a canvas duct that can breath a bit or something waterproof like a vinyl car seat fabric.

The current fabric is like a high grade burlap, very loose weave and attractive. I expected it to go to hell quickly (they were brand new and unused when I bought the boat). It's turned out to be very durable and good at repelling stains however.

Phifertex works great for this. Also you might consider those snap together plastic squares that get the mattress off the platform and allow air to circulate. We added these squares, cut to fit, and our bunk has been amazingly dry and non-clamy feeling even after multiple nights. A high quality mattress pad will also help prevent body moisture from getting to the faom and makes a word of difference..

There is a place called The Fabric Warehouse on the main road into Auburn, just before K.L. Jack on the right. They sell Sunbrella, Phifertex and all kinds of commercial grade upholstery materials, zippers, foam etc. etc.. We are very lucky to live near this great asset! They are GREAT and CHEAP!! Their phone number is (207) 784-7151 We bought out Ultra Suede from them for about $12.00 per yard and it normally costs about $80.00 per yard. There is literally NO better place to go for boat fabric and supplies!!

The Sailrite catalog (p120) carries a "cushion underlining" at $5.95 a yard, 54 inches wide, white or gray or black. www.sailrite.com can get you a nice 173-page catalog with oodles of stuff for the boater's sewing projects. They also have a nice forum for your questions.

Normally I think our Sunsure fabric cockpit cushions are a bit of overkill for interior cushions, but they certainly do have merit in challenging indoor conditions. They are approximately $28 sq/ft and are made from premium grade closed cell foam and the breathable Sunsure fabric covering:

Thanks but one of the nice things about the old boat I bought was that the cushions had just been replaced. They were brand new and had never even been sat or slept on. I've found the foam quite satisfactory so far. I'm simply tired of holding a full width V berth cushion up with my shoulder every time I have to get into the lockers below. I also can't turn the single cushion up on edge to dry the bottom.

Hey Main Sail, what kind of device is that on your faucet? Filter? Fresh or seawater? Do you recommend it? Oh and nice looking salon :)
