Happy New Year!
Ok, I left her in for a Christmas sail with my college boys! The weekend before Christmas she broke her mooring and found a nice soft sandy beach. After several high tides and lots of low tide anchor readjustments all is well but.... the rudder is gone! So, I am in need of a new replacement rudder for my 1976 O'Day 25. I've built wood/fiberglass rudders before for old wooden sailboats, perhaps I should go that route again but I'm not sure if the transome would hold up. All thoughts are welcome.

Sorry to hear you lost the rudder but at least the boat was spared. You can check with Rudy at D&R Marine (www.drmarine.com) or check with Idasailor (www.iidasailor.com) for a couple of alternatives. Idasailor has a kickup version and a fixed version. I've bought things from Rudy who specializes in O'Day replacement parts. The archives have some discussions of the Idasailor. Also, you could put a Wanted to Buy ad on this site. Anyhow, good luck with the replacement and hopefully you have no more problems.

Both the sources recommended are fine to buy from.

If you want to build one, the actual plans for the rudder and the boat are on file in Mystic Seaport Museum, Ships Plans Department. They can be dupicated for a price. And the plans for the 25 include the designers optional kick up rudder.

Ed,
Do they have plans for all the O'Day rudders, or just the O'Day 25s? Just curious.

Rudder

Thanks! I sent an email to Rudy, I guess I'll hear from him on Monday. Idasailor seems a bit too $$$$. Thanks again.

Mystic

Thanks for the Mystic idea. I built a rudder for my 1941 Stout Fella Sloop with plan from Mystic, they were so helpful. I'll go there if I can't find a used one.

Joe,

Hunt and Associates turned over all the old sailboat plans. I did not inquire about 'all' plans that they were involved in. John D. current president's name was on the O'Day 25 plans. I had suspected that. He was very short with my inquiry to him, but did respond that they turned the plans I was interested over to Mystic. I have no idea about the 222, but 'ships plans' does respond to emails about what they have. I would point out that the plans that I saw were very fragile. They do make copies for $$'s. If you are rebuilding one of the older boats, the plans would be worth the bucks. Again, the 25 had plans for a kick up rudder drawn in 1983 by Hunt.

Thanks Ed! That's pretty interesting! I think that I was introduced to E. Howard Hunt years ago at the Fall River O'Day factory when they were building my boat back in June of 1986. They left my winches and tracks off my boat for me, and I was inquiring about the feasibility of mounting them on the combings. They were all pretty nice people to talk to. I took two tours of the factory back then to see my boat in the building process.
