We just received about 7 inches Friday night and today we have this:


Winter Storm Warning

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAY ME426 AM EST SUN DEC 21 2008...A MAJOR WINTER STORM WILL AFFECT THE ENTIRE REGION TODAY AND TONIGHT....A MAJOR WINTER STORM WILL HIT THE REGION WITH HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS TODAY AND TONIGHT AS LOW PRESSURE OVER THE MIDWEST REDEVELOPS OFF THE MID ATLANTIC COAST THIS MORNING...THEN INTENSIFIES RAPIDLY AS IT HEADS NORTHEAST UP THE COAST THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO THE MARITIMES TONIGHT.

THE SNOW MAY MIX WITH SLEET ALONG THE COAST...OTHERWISE EXPECT HEAVY SNOW TO BLANKET THE REGION WITH OVER A FOOT OF SNOW IN MANY AREAS. INCREASING NORTHEAST WINDS AHEAD OF THE LOW TODAY AND STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS BEHIND THE LOW TONIGHT WILL CREATE CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONSCAN BE EXPECTED AT TIMES...ESPECIALLY IN OPEN AREAS.THE INTENSE WINTER STORM WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A BITTERLY COLD NORTHWEST FLOW ON MONDAY.

UNNECESSARY TRAVEL SHOULD BE AVOIDED. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...DRIVE WITH EXTREME CAUTION AND ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME TO REACH YOUR DESTINATION. BRING ALONG A WINTER SURVIVAL KIT TO INCLUDE EXTRA WARM CLOTHING AND FOOD IN CASE YOU GET STRANDED.

Only if you can get about 500 miles off shore in about 3 hours. We have freezing rain in Maryland now, 0830 Sunday.
Some fool will probably try. Even Navy ships try to avoid storms like this.

It should be a good sail. Nothing like making time with the wind at your back.

Be sure to leave the big roller headsail up in case you get unexpected light winds. You won't want to be trying to thread that sail into the foil track and hoist it once you are at sea.

Above all, if conditions get rough, don't go up on deck to do anything like trying to stow that hanked on staysail. You can get hurt on deck, that's where all the accidents happen.

I'm sure your fuel filters are fine because the engine ran well all summer. Don't miss any of this good breeze fussing around with the fuel system. You won't need the engine much with this forecast.

Bermuda will be easy to find even if your GPS craps out. Just look for all the jet trails converging on the horizon and follow them in.

Nice to know there is at least one real sailor in this group. Have a great trip. Nothing like Christmas at sea for priceless memories.

I think in the Christmas spirit you should go to East Greenwich, R.I., and find the sailors that got rescued and offer a ride and then they will be half way to PR :D

Here near Cleveland it is blowing 30+ at times. But it would be offshore so good to go. Except that it is also 26 degrees.

Checking the forecast at the boat near Beafort, NC, I see it is 63! And a couple of 70s are in the forecast. Let me know when you are going by Tim and I can go out the inlet and run with you to Bermuda.

Seriously I hope to be out there starting around January 17. I am hoping for some decent weather offshore to Florida. Sorry, already have crew. :)

We were out on the beach with our dog. The sea smoke is awesome. The photo is from my cell so the quality is fairly poor. Sea smoke is vapor coming off the water into the air. the water is in the 40s and the air was 8 with 10kts of wind. So the water is relatively warm. Even though the snow had not quite started you can see it coming up from the south.

In Maryland the rain stopped before 0930 and the sun is shining now 1335. Tomorrow is forecast to be colder and windy.

If Tim wears the ski goggles, he'll be unable to apply his suntan lotion evenly...it's blowing pretty stiff from the NW in NY Harbor this AM. About 1/4 inch Fahrenheit with the wind chill.

Seriously, if I had a pair of skates I could have skated from the parking lot to my office. ( I work out of a construction double wide trailer). We had snow followed by a brief thaw and rain followed by a deep freeze of below zero temps this past week. Never have seen anything like it...more days like this and I'm selling everything and moving the boat down to Florida.

I've obviously gone soft-

Air temp 8 degrees, wind blowing 10 knots, and you're WAKING THE DOG ON THE BEACH!?!? At 58 degrees, you can have several HUNDRED miles of beach to yourself here in the sunshine state...

I didn't believe for a moment you were going to Bermuda in that weather, but I wouldn't have believed the walking on the beach, either, but you have photo proof. I guess there's nothing left to say but Bon Voyage!:D:D

Gosh, you New Englanders ARE tough....

Hey Tim its not such a bad idea. Dont forget your not gonna get any snow buildup offshore
No driveway to shovel. but dont forget your gas powered snowblower for the deck and some de Icer for the rigging

Here is another photo. As you can see my wife is leaving no footprints. The only prints you can see are from earlier when the sand was a little softer. The tide had only gone out about 2 hours earlier and the beach was like solid rock.

The cold ain't so bad. It promotes sharing bodily warmth.:thumbup:

Nice pic, Tim, but-

we wear alot less on our beaches, and to cool off, share adult beverages. Which, of course, lead to sharing body heat!

I guess all roads lead to the same destination!;)
