Hi, I would like to buy a new Hunter 41, and have not decided on the 2 cabin or 3 cabin version.

I will also add a generator. This is suppose to go in the Port locker. Since the port locker is smaller in the tri cabin version. I would like to know if anyone have a tri cabin version with a generator.

Comments and photos will be appreciated.

With the tri-cabin layout you will loose the large port locker and the pantry shelves in the galley. The 3 cabin version is usually used in rental fleet applications. I was tempted to get the 3 cabin layout but you give up a lot of storage options. Also, I do not believe that you will have any room for a genset with the 3 cabin layout.

I have a Hunter 41 witih the one large aft cabin. I had the dealer install a onen gererator. It is like sleeping with a Mack truck in your driveway.

41 DS Panda gen

I had a 2007 Hunter 41DS with a two cabin layout. The gen was installed in the port cockpit compartment. The sound from the gen is very loud when sleeping in the aft cabin. Tried to soundproof the compartment and it was a little better. Having it located in the cabin under the nav seat like the 44 and 45DS is a better place.

The gen is a must if you want to stay on the hook for a while and also want to use your air conditioning system. Otherwise the inverter is fine.

Kind regards,

Ray

I went overboard with the soundproofing in the port locker where the genset is located. Still very loud. I think the problem is the walls are all connected, hence the vibration and sound is amplified. No real solution for the h41. However, the genset is performing quite well.

You will be much happier with the two cabin version, stowage and galley pantry. We actually had the dealer remove the genset from ours during the sales process and added six fans. We sail Lake Texoma on the border on Texas and Oklahoma and stay quite cool on hot summer nights.

Generators and Sound Proofing

Miguel, I think you bought a 356 about the same time I did. I have a Northern Lights 5KW on my 356 in the port locker. I had custom soundproofing made for it and it is noticable, but not noisy. The main difference in many of these generators and sound is the speed at which they run and the number of cylinders. We run our generator whenever we are away from the dock so we can keep heating/cooling going all the time. It doesn't bother us at all. Before the custom ($1,200) sound enclosure, it was a bit louder, and just enough to be annoying in the cockpit. In the rear bedroom, it was noisy, but not now.

The Northern Lights runs at 1800 rpm with 3 cylinders, whereas the Panda runs at 3600 rpm on 1 cylinder. A friend of mine has a Panda, fully insulated within the Panda soundbox, on his Cabo Rico 38 and it will run you off the boat with noise! I took his boat down the Tenn Tom to Punta Gorda, FL - 1200 miles and we ran the generator very little due to the noise issue.

Marty Colburn, the owner of Lighthouse Landing linked below, has a H41DS as his personal boat, and installed a 6 KW Northern Lights in the port locker with the standard sound enclosure that comes for that generator. I would recommend you e-mail or talk to him about his installation. He is a Hunter Dealer on KY Lake and is first rate. His contact information should be available on the website. If you have trouble contacting him, let me know and I will get the information you might need from him and pass it along.

We have looked at the 41 and it is a great boat!
