Why boats not motorhomes?

My family and I take our hunter 430 down to Newport Harbor, California, 4-5 times a year. For those of you who don't know the area it is some of the most expensive property in the world.
The rent moorings for $5 a night. We normally get one right off Balboa Island. As we pull up to the mooring and get situated homeowners sit on there balconies and watch as though they are happy to see you. As they watch they probley think "this is why I live here, I can sit on my balcony and watch things like this".
My boat is worth about $130,000. If I were to pull up in there front yard with a motorhome worth that amount they would have the cops there before I got the jacks down.
It just makes me wonder why a boat and motorhome are that much different.

A sailboat can take you across oceans and all the way to far away places with strange sounding names and a motor home looks like a glorified bus that stinks and crowds the highways.

That's easy...

How many songs have been written about "chugging, chugging over the bounding hills in a Winnebego?" How many poems start, "All I want is a long bus and a map to steer it by?" Would Longfellow have ever even thought of writing "Thou too belch fumes O bus of state?" Or would Colegridge have written "The Rhyme of the Ancient Caravaner?" And even a modern day psalmist is unlikely to to write, "They that go down the road in RVs, that do business in long roads..."

I think that answers your question...there's a romance about boats that not only doesn't exist, it never could, about RVs

Many, many non boaters sort of hold on to a dream

of one day sailing over the horizon to a utopia of no schedule, bikinis 24/7, and a cocktail always in reach. When they see a boat, it momentarily rekindles the dream and puts a smile on their face. Most people when faced with the work and planning involved would quit within 24 hours. But it sure is ok for them to have that little place in their mind to go visit occasionally.

The person who can sail a 40' boat onto a mooring, coming from someplace over the horizon with no roads or street signs to guide him, is operating at a level far above that of a bus driver...Motor Homes are common. Hunter 43's are somewhat uncommon and can operate in an environment far removed from the drudgery of a freeway..

In areas where sailboats become common and a nuisance, nearby homeowners attitudes can change quickly..

a sailboat will get you to the four corners of the world... a motorhome will get you to the bottom of the ramp. I rest MY case!

I pull my Mac with an RV. It may not work for you, but it works for me.

A motorhome is often seen as a relatively low-class way to travel regardless of the cost of the motorhome itself. Sailboats, or yachts as they are often called, are seen as much more of an upscale, leisurely, and luxurious way to travel—the refuge of the wealthy elite... etc.

A motorhome parked on the street has no "barrier" to cross when it comes to the people aboard it coming onto their property, where a sailboat effectively leaves a moat of water around the boat—separating them physically and psychologically from the homes on shore.

Also, sailors are often considered people with a skill that takes some amount of experience, skill and education to master—which the driver of a motorhome doesn't really have—since driver's licenses are so commonplace.

Finally, there is a mystique about sailboats and an elegance to them that can not be matched by a diesel or gasoline burning, lumbering motorhome. How many people have dreamed about sailing beyond the sunset... and how many have dreamed of driving a Winnebago beyond the sunset. The fact that sailboats can cross oceans, and do so in near serene silence sets it far apart from motorhomes.

Because the guy on the balcony has money. And what he sees in your boat is... MONEY!

Whens the last time you got stuck behind a slow moving sailboat?
I liked the example of what seperates the passengers of a sailboat from those of a motorhome. Water verses grass. It's much easier to walk on grass than it is on water. The differance is the degree of seperation, one of them anyway.

Keep it up,

Wellll, er, um...

"Whens the last time you got stuck behind a slow moving sailboat?"

Quite often while motoring up a narrow channel behind a sailboat that insists on tacking back and forth across it under sail.

That is Irian from Salem, MA. She was built in 1959 and is 41 ft. Not bad for half a century. I would say someone spent a boatload either keeping her up or restoring her.

I’ve seen Dolphins on motor homes,

but I’ve never seen a roadrunner on a sailboat.
What does that tell you?
