You could make several small deadlights. Even double glazed if you like. The smaller they are the thinner the lexan can safely be.

Light isn't really an issue on my boat with two 20" x 20" clear skylights and lots of ports. The whole companionway project got started by the desire for secure footing as it's the critical place to stand when furling in rough conditions. Any plastic or panels will just get scratched unless the stiffening strips are close enough to keep my foot from going between.

If I find I need more light, I'll just replace one of the wood drop boards with plastic.
