had trouble with my bottom paint starting to flake off this year. after hauling my '98 H410 this fall the yard is recommending I soda wash the bottom to remove all the bottom paint. then apply a new barrier coat and start anew with fresh bottom paint.
any pros or cons for this approach out there?

Soda blasting takes fairly specialized equipment and technique so you will likely need to hire an outfit to do this. I keep my boat at home and I used a commercial blaster with walnut shell media. It worked great, took about 4 hours and cost about $500. If the yard does the soda blasting, sanding and painting, you are looking at big bucks. For your boat, probably in the neighborhood of $5000 minimum.

As for barrier coat, if you already have one then you should not need to replace it. If not, most yards will recommend adding one if you strip all the way down to gelcoat anyway.

To answer your question, yes, this is a good thing to do. In the future, use only multiseason ablative paint for the bottom to prevent the buildup of paint. It seems very common for owners to cheap out and use a hard paint which will eventually result in this thick buildup of flaking paint. Hard paint is ok in some areas but in the NE where you are only in the water part time, multi season ablative, I feel, is the best paint to use.

BTW, I applied the necessary coats of Interlux 2000, one coat of red ablative bottom paint and 2 coats of Interlux Micron Extra shark white. I added a third coat on the high wear areas. I now only apply 1 thin coat of Micron Extra every spring with and extra coat on the wear areas. My boat stays in the water 7 months with one bottom scrubbing in the beginning of August.

yard indicated they wouldn't be able to fully recommend whether a barrier coat was needed till the soda washing is done. basically a wait and see what comes off in the wash so to say. I have used Micron Extra since '99 so it's not a cheapo paint. I do intend to switch to Micron 66 based in part by recommendations on this board. not sure what a barrier coat will cost if needed, but the soda wash is under 2 boat bucks, and since the boat is paid for and I have no intention of selling anytime soon, I do want to do things right.

If you have been using Micron Extra since it was new then it should not have built up and flaked unless it was applied too thick. Micron 66 will not help prevent this in the future. Also, check with your dealer as they should know if it already has a barrier coat.

66 is good but I like shark white which it is not offered in. It helps to see when the bottom needs a scrub. It is also usually a little cheaper than the 66.

Expect to pay about $600 for materials alone for the barrier coat. The yard should be able to give you a very close estimate for this.

BTW, sodablasting is fairly economical. My boat has THREE hulls and I sodablasted it last year for $900 or so. Sodablasting is a great way to get rid of the bottom paint and prep the surface for barrier coating and painting.

Doing the barrier coat yourself is pretty easy with Interprotect 2000E. Get some of the grey and some of the white to simplify applying it. If you want some advice on barrier coating with IP2000E I can copy a post I wrote about applying it from another forum.
