On my last trip from Houston to new orleans, I came withing 50 feet of wipeing out a catalina 470 that was anchored in the fog at mile 118 ICWW . @ sailboats were anchored in the fog and deep in a bend of narrow ICW channel. If you are traveling the dich and stop at night NEVER , NEVER anchor in a bend. Luckily it was hazy / foggy and ALL icw traffic was movine very slow if moving at all. I sometimes travel in the fog on radar and Capn voyager software ," depending on area and safety factors ". Most ALL barge traffic will stay in the bends and avoid the shallow points. When we are strung out over 600 ft long and 54 feet wide, we have to use ALL the bend and canal to navigate the turns, so being in the bend is right where your gonna get hit. Luckily, Myself and another tug captain were professional enough to stop, sound the danger signal, get them awake and have them move to other side of canal.
Others just bitched about them being there and tried to avoid them while passing along their postion to other barge traffic. Knowing they were there, i had slowed to les than 2 KTS and was watching for them. After some HARD backing down , I stopped less than 50 ft from them with my barges. These barges weigh 480 TONS when empty and the slightest bump can destroy a yacht. ALL ways be aware of your surroundings and be safe. Your family needs you.

Chuck....you're a good man and an excellent captain for doing what you did for those folks. Like me, you probably remember the couple who anchored just east of the Dauphin Island Bridge on a foggy night several years ago. While they were sleeping a tow ran over them, pushing their sailboat deep into Mobile Bay mud. I will never forget that tradegy.....I'm reminded of it everytime I anchor for the night.

Have a safe trip.

I hope the lesson you tried to impress on them sticks... or we'll probably end up reading about them earning Darwin awards. What in the world possessed the to anchor in that location???

The same thing that possess people to go on Lake Michigan in a Bass Boat, no radio, seat cushions as PFD's and a cooler of pop (barley pop, that is). Also, kind of like this summer and the 1/2 dozen drownings that occured at "No Swimming, Beach Closed, Dangerous Rip Currents". Yes, there were 4' - 6' waves; Yes, the Media was all over it, all summer; Yes, it still continued to happened....
And we are ?supposed to feel sorry for them?
There are accidents; and then, there is just plain Darwinian stupidity.

Rant done,
Nik

Chuck, you're a good man. Having traversed the ICW from Port Aransas to Houston last year for the first time, I gained a lot of respect for you guys pushing barges. We made the trip nonstop. At night the barge captains were extremely helpful to make sure we all made a safe passage. The double wides were very helpfull in making sure we didn't get too close to the shore as the depth goes from 17' to 2" very quickly. You guys have a tough job and we recreational boaters need to keep from making it even tougher.
