For anyone interested in Maltese Falcon, I highly recommend the book "Mine's Bigger" by David Kaplan. The book details the how, and just as interestingly the why, of Maltese Falcon. Tom Perkins, the owner, is a fascinating guy, and the story of this amazing yacht is a real eye-opener.

It is quite an engineering marvel

I have been fascinated with it. A square rigger I believe, with the ability for the masts to rotate to change the angle of attack to the wind. She is quite slick. Their log book has some very nice photos in it.

maltese falcon

I just finished the book. Truly remarkable feat of enginering and design. It can be chartered for $440,000.00 per wk, plus fuel and crew tips, also food and booze.
Maybe for vacation next year if I save up.

It was quite a sight!

I wouldn't have missed it for the world! There were thousands of sailboats on S.F. Bay to greet the Maltese Falcon's arrival. But the news reports were wrong about the tide. There was a high tide of 5.7' at 11:18, Slack Water at 12:51 and low tide of 1.2' at 16:55. The Maltese Falcon cleared the Gate at 14:07. The Golden Gate Bridge Clearance is 221' at mhhw. Even so, it looked to be very tight quarters when she cleared the span!

Won't be much sailing on the 12th in the central bay. More like a parking lot then a scramble after the show.
