Do you unsub from your favorite Y-Tube channel when they start popping out babies?

I'm just curious if i'm an outlier or anyone else feel the same? Not out of spite or anything like that, just from not wanting to watch a 'raising our kid' channel.

Three of my top youtube channels were so interesting and raw/fresh (for lack of a better word) when they were new and doing their thing. Once they became a success several years later the babies started popping out of the woman and it kinda ruined the channel in my opinion. Not that i have anything against children, love them as much as any other person, but i'm not really into watching a family channel.

Anyway, just bored having a coffee and was wondering if anyone else feels the same? My ex did accuse me of having 'commitment issues', so that likely has something to do with it :D

I'm just bummed. Really good and interesting sailing/youtube channels are hard to find. Some like Alluring Arctic very hard since they are very niche. Sadly, Alluring Arctic is one on my list of three. Although the kid hasnt arrived yet (due soon), i'm not optimistic about future direction of the channel.

I wonder from the youtubers perspective if when they have kids and make them a part of their channel if that actually increases their viewership? Not that i'm suggesting they are having kids to increase viewership. The young couples are just 'reaching that age'.

Not really about sailing. Maybe this should be in the sail call lounge forum.

A veteran of the ad biz once told me that if you don't get it, you're probably not the target.

I'm a fan of sailing channels, like Sailing Florence, Sailing Alone. And I'm a fan of build/refit channels, like Duracell Project and Refit and Sail.

Then there's RAN Sailing which went from sailing to building something interesting. And Sampson Boat Co, which went from building something interesting to sailing it. I still watch both.

And sometimes channels drift away from the reasons I started watching them. It's their channels, I'm thankful they take the time to make these videos but in the end they don't owe me anything. C'est la vie, right?

Before we took off on our adventures and right after I retired I watched seemingly (to my wife at least) endless hours of people cruising on YouTube. I watched competent sailors in interesting places and slow motion train wrecks. Once we returned from our adventures I found myself watching fewer cruising videos and more build or major refit videos, you know the folks, Sail Life, Sailing Uma, Sampson Boatworks, Acorn to Arabella, Ran Sailing, Odd Life Crafting and Delos with their catamaran build. Cruising only videos I catch on occasion when they pop up on my feed or I wonder how they are doing.

Kids as a deterrent, not so much. The kids show up on Ran, Delos, and Odd Life in small doses and they aren't the focus of the series, which is fine with me.

Well, I'm probably a bad one to respond to this thread. I pretty much find them all pretty boring.

Alluring Artic I've watched more than others mentioned. It will be interesting to see how it may change with the new arrival.

I find them all boring after a couple shows. I'll watch some specific episodes when they may be talking about something that interests me but those are rare.

Actually, I often unsubscribe from channels that lose my interest.... but don't be angry about it. It's their life, their choice and it's also yours. Speaking of kids on boats.. My favorite channel now is "Sailing with Six" It's an aussie family with 4 kids making their way around the world on a Lagoon 46 cat. The kids ages range from 10 to 16, they all very different, but cool, each with their own interests, but also very supportive of each other. Most importantly, they all understand how lucky they are to be part of such a unique family.
The dad has a business back in Australia that requires his regular attention, that is what supports the adventure and the whole family understands its importance. Hope a few of you might check them out. https://www.youtube.com/@sailingwithsix

I haven't actually seen a whole lot of blue ocean crossings. And there are pro cameras out there that can take some good photographs at night. But I don't see it. Anyone notice that there are kids in all hollywood films? Even when they're not the center of focus.

At the risk of turning this thread into a 'my favorite youtube channel thread'. Have you watched Tupaia's videos? You have been to South America i believe from some advice you have given me in the past. Sadly their journey has ended for now as they were travelling//doing research/ supplemental income, so was never meant to be a prolonged channel, but their videos are the best I have personally seen on the internet so far.

They did like spectacular photography of where they were no? Especially their drone shots were excellent.

If that's who I'm thinking of, I've watched a bit. If I'm thinking of someone else, let me know I'll go back and look them up.

I'm just not a person that spends a lot of time watching videos. In fact one of my current pet peeves is if I'm looking for information on a specific topic, I'll more likely find some.youtube video that may or may not address what I'm actually looking for but I have to spend way too much time listening to them drone on about stuff, often promoting themselves, before there is any real meat. Then if they do address what I am looking for, now I have to sit down and take notes - further wasting my time....

In the case of Tupaia's videos - if I'm remembering correctly - if you like video images - I have to agree - absolutely spectacular videography (is that the right word?)!

I did watch another YouTube video - I apologize I don't remember who it was - they hired a professional drone videographer as they sailed up the coast of Greenland. That was also spectacular at the level of Tupaia.

It's just I don't have a lot of patience to sit and watch these kinds of things. I have way too many things I'm doing.

Correct. Tupaia (Nao & Lauric) basically made high level cinematographic videos of their travels in South America. No talking so not so much like a traditional YouTube sailing channel. They did add optional subtitles in some of their later videos. They were also on 'NoForeignLand' when they were active and would share some info to their subscribers.

HA! you need chatGPT. My gods it saves me SO much time trying to narrow down specific information. I get what you mean. For me my pet peeve was first trying to sort through the first two or three pages of advertisements on the search engine results, single out the few legitimate links and try and read it all as fast as I could to try and mine the relevant info i started looking for two hours earlier. And hopefully not getting sidetracked along the way into some never ending rabbit hole of internet brain rot. I agree, I only follow a small handful of channels, but only when i have a couple hours to waste now and again. I'll try and catch up on some of what i missed, so loosing one when they evolve into something i dont care to watch anymore kinda sucks.

I'm not sure why you would think I don't have access to AI based searches... I was actually part of the original beta testing of a couple these tools before they became available to the public. I was also part of a "think tank" exploring where they excel and where they may be lacking.

Must be because I'm old, folks just assume I'm some sort of luddite. In fact, just the other day, I was called a luddite over on cruisers and sailors for agreeing with a simple non-technological solution...

In any case, I completely agree - the use of a good AI engine can really speed up research.

It's a joke. It reads out like it has a personality. But it's no different then being able to save searches in a search engine. The only problem is lot of the time it saves time, but it also gets things wrong the other half the time.

For example:

Me: I want to find a boat yard that trades in equipment to save on costs on building my boat.

AI: No problem. And gives me a list of websites.

Me: I emailed supplier websites and they all tell me they're either out of business or no longer selling parts.

Ai: I made a mistake. You are absolutely right.

Me: I want to search youtube for videos of sailors in the 40 degree south paraelle.

AI. Absolutely here are 20 videos I selected just for you.

Me: All the videos are filmed off Hawaii.

AI: Oops your right!

Me: Nitroglycerin uses an oxidiser and a glycerin. How does glycerin provide the fuel.

AI: I"m sorry I can not help you build any explosives that could harm someone.

Me: Just tell me about the glycerin.

AI: I can not talk about glycerin, or any chemical used in the making of nitorglycerin.

Me: I can go to the grocery store and in the jam making section I can buy it. I could buy 5L if I wanted too. And it's not listed as dangerous.

AI: My appologies your right!

Me: Here is the formula how to make nitroglycerin (with held obviously).

AI: Your absolutely right. This is how Glycerin reacts with a strong oxidiser blah blah.
