I asked AI to identify the differences between the JH2 and JH3 engines.

Main Differences

• Larger displacemen and slightly higher power — The 3JH3E has a bigger bore and longer stroke, giving it more torque potential and a modest power increase while remaining in the same compact footprint class.

• Refined design — Yanmar described the JH3 series as having upgraded blocks, smoother and quieter running, and better compliance with emerging emissions rules of the late 1990s/early 2000s compared with the earlier JH2 series.

• Minor dimensional and accessory differences — Overall package size is similar enough that many installations can swap one for the other with relatively straightforward adaptations (mounts, exhaust, cooling lines, and controls still need checking). Weight is a bit higher on the 3JH3E.

• Parts commonality — Some maintenance items (filters, impellers, etc.) overlap or are similar across the early JH family, but critical internal components (pistons, liners, injection timing, etc.) differ due to the bore/stroke change. Always match parts to the exact model and serial number.

• Operating character — Both are high-rpm mechanical diesels known for reliability. The 3JH3E generally runs a bit smoother and cleaner, especially on cold starts, than the earlier 3JH2E.

I did a global forum search for the engine here on SBO.

I understand that the engine manual is specific for the 3JH3E because of the above listed differences. I found (from one of the search SBO posts) the manual priced for about $32.
Good luck.

Finished up today. Gauge is reading 155 f after about 15 minutes of runtime. Hardest part was running the wire from the engine to the helm
I ran an extra one just in case. Hose id is 5/8 or 16mm. Loosened the hose at the top and drained thefluid down to the point that I was cutting. Poured the fluid back in the top of the hose after installing the sensor.
Used the Glo Shift brand gauge and sensor. Pretty straightforward wiring.
Gauge reads when the key is turned on.

Thanks for the final update on the installation @Toolittletime .

I know this is pretty obvious to anyone who was there and I know there is a ground wire attached to the insert:

22 bucks. All Aluminum
- but how did you manage a solid electrical connection to the side of the aluminum insert ? Or is the connection elsewhere on the sensor ? Connection doesn't show here :

The aluminum body has a threaded hole for the sensor to screw into.onto. The sensor has 2 wires off it . One wire that goes to the gauge and one that goes to ground.....in my case I grounded it to the engine. Can't see the 2 wires very well on my installed picture.
