Disassemble ST4000 MK2 wheel unit

I noticed the motor on my autopilot was a bit loose today. There were no obvious screws holding the two halves of the housing together. Are they held together by the same screws that are holding it to the wheel? Asking before losing a few dozen ball bearings in to the water.

On a side note, if anyone has some play between the peg on your pedestal and the hole in the wheel unit, a couple pieces of heatshrink worked very nicely. Hopefully no more clunk sound

The bearings are held in a very lightweight black plastic matrix, I pulled one apart to discover the plastic had broken and the bearings were loose. It was non-functional at that point anyway, made crunching sounds when turning the wheel.

In 2021, I rebuilt my EV 100 Autopilot. It uses the 4000MK2 wheel assembly. I used the same Chinese electric Motor that Greg used. Bought it on Amazon. I first thought it was the motor. I learned that the failure was the drive ring. Here is my parts discovery.

I haven't disassembled the unit yet but it worked great for 6+ hours of straight use yesterday

There's some great info in this thread! I wonder if it's possible to use a wheel unit from another auto pilot that's more robust. If amperage and speed are too much for the drive unit, a resistor could be used.

Good question. I spoke with an Autolhelm engineer in England. He said that Raymarine bought the company. They decided to "lighten the materials of the wheel." I asked if I could use the EV100 with an old Autohelm 4000 wheel. He thought it would be possible. Likely, the motor could be an issue. He could not encourage it as the conversation was being recorded.

With the EV100 there is a maximum 7amp continous drive current from the ACU.
This becomes a factor for the hydraulic version. The EV150 produces a maximum 12amp continous drive current from the ACU. This unit is used for their hydraulic power boat system.

This is useful info. I'm curious how well the system would work with a wheel unit from a different brand altogether. All this to save a few cents per unit

The Raymarine wheel is expensive. If I had to replace it I would look at installing a linear drive unit.
I fortunately I found, via an online search, a replacement Drive wheel. They were wildly priced. They break do to moisture getting to the plastic. Now I remove my wheel and store it in the cabin when not on the boat for greater than 4 weeks. Easier to remove the wheel than unbolt the Wheel AP.

Raymarine is the only supplier of a wheel auto pilot that is able to connect to a network.
There is a CPT auto pilot that is a stand alone system that only holds a heading. Haven't heard of anybody hacking that system to connect it to a RM system.
Probably why RM gets away with the outrageous pricing.

I meant keep the electronics and install a wheel unit unit from another brand. It's a DC motor so it shouldn't be too hard to make it work. I read another post that suggested using some diodes and relays to increase power. A bit rudimentary but it should work as well

That sounds like a project... By the time it's all said and done - is the point to save money? Make a robust autopilot? Have fun playing around with electronics on your boat? Some balance of those? Some other reason I missed?

4000ST is notoriously weak. Why replace it with another flawed unit? On my boat, there isn't room for a below deck autopilot

I understand that. I think they are one step above worthless. But you haven't answered my question.

My O’Day 322 weighs in around 10,000 dry and 12,000 pounds loaded. I had an original St4000 on it when I bought her. But the belt would not hold the wheel too well, despite replacing it. I found a new, but open box ST4002 with a rudder sensor and the “newer“ course computer (compared to the ST4000 which had it in the control head).

It isn’t the most robust, but it does ok in most conditions. Waves are a bit harder for it to keep up with…but I can still use it to keep the boat heading in the right direction while I make lunch, etc.

It does pretty good even in very windy conditions, as long as I balance the sails some. I often sail in 15-20 knots and my AP can drive the boat pretty well.

This was taken a few weeks ago on Lake Michigan… 10 knots of wind, but some chop from a north wind.

In my opinion, the Raymarine Wheel Autopilot does pretty well in benign to moderate wind and sea state conditions.

When going into the wind, if the sail plan is well balanced, the wheel pilot can maintain course just like a helmsman maintaining the wheel with his fingers.

Change the conditions. Move the wind to abeam or abaft and raise the conditions to 15 plus knots & 3 plus ft chop, and the little electric motor becomes overwhelmed. It is the impact of the waves on the boat and the rudder that the motor cannot handle.

On my boat, I take the helm. The AP works fine aboard my 16K displacement boat when motoring.

That is what I understood you to have meant. I was pointing out there are no other brands, assuming you mean another brand than Raymarine, not just another model.

20 minutes of searching and to my surprise, you are right. All of the other units are tiller pilots, below deck or are using Raymarine's wheel unit
