Hi all.... John here ! I'm looking to get back into sailing, seriously considering a Javelin... I regret selling a Daysailor some 18 years ago but..... anyway, looking to chat just a bit with those who have some insights about the hinged mast and parts for same... and so forth?!!! well, the mast is straight and good I think, however the sub-mast is missing on the boat... I'm wondering how easy it is to find or make a new sub mast....It would also need a tabernacle I suppose and the piece to secure the sub-mast to the deck.... its a 1986 that has descent sails, fiberglass looks pretty darn good, and titles for the boat and trailer.... $1100 , seems reasonable to me. I'm not against a little more investing, just curious how to put it all together ?!!!
This looks like a keel stepped mast. What is the "submast" you're referring to? On deck stepped masts there is a compression post beneath the deck that transmits compression forces to the keel and hull. A keel stepped mast doesn't need a compression post.
Rudy at D&R called the mast on the Day sailor and Javelin a hinged mast.... 2 part mast and the deck to the bottom or hull or keel I suppose, he called the " sub mast".... that is the part I need to know about.... I really wanna take a swing at the boat, purchase it and make it float and hang the cloth out....not terribly sure about how difficult to make that happen
The Javelin i'm looking at is missing this sub mast....it protrudes through the deck about 2 inches.... then with a tabernacle, recieves the mast

That is an unusual arrangement. The tabernacle part should be relatively easy to find, it is used on a number of different boats. Your best bet may be looking for a used or damaged mast with the same profile and making your own. The tabernacle looks very similar to the one used on a Flying Scot. The mast sections may even be the same.
Thanks Dave.... that's what it should look like.... I don't think having to produce that for this Javelin is a deal-breaker...
20 years ago I had an O'Day DaySailor, I really enjoyed that boat but sold it, bad move.... anyway, I think I'll pick up the Javelin next week and give it a go !!
