I picked up a 1999 mercury 9.9 4stroke kicker today. No tiller, remote controls. Anyone know how to lock it in the straight forward position? There is no friction knob or lever that I've found.

I'd say look at the manual but I already know that Mercury will try to charge you for one. I called and asked for a pdf of one 8 years ago. I haven't bought a Mercury motor since

I have the manual for the Mercury Outboards for 1998 - 2002. It covers 2.5HP to 60 HP outboards. I am still trying to scan the pages for the information you need. The files just come out to large for this posting. Stand by, I’ll get it or I will PM you and send it to you. May be better idea anyway.

Some PDF apps have an option to reduce file size. On a Mac using preview it is at the bottom of the Save dialog box in a dropdown menu for Quartz Filters.

In someways, JPEGs are better because the forum s/w can open them. PDFs must be downloaded first before viewing.

You have an 1999 mercury 9.9 4stroke outboard motor that was removed from a boat rigged with remote steering and transmission controls that has had the tiller removed. If you want to work on that 28 year old motor yourself you should order an actual service manual for that specific motor from Mercury by identifying the manual you have with its specific serial number for an accurate response from the manufacturer. I looked at the photo on your original post and I found it unhelpful because it has not been KISSED.

I found the answer on the Crowley Marine tech website . Depending on the option you choose ,the steering lock is located on the port side of the engine for the remote controlled version .

I have access mercury dealer manuals and parts catalogs.

Factory manual mentions nothing of a lock. Parts diagrams I finally found a clutch set up to increase friction and hold it forward. If parts are avaliable, I will give that a try. Often times in the accessories or rigging section they offer a bracket to lock motors forward. Not the case on this one.

I should have done more research before asking here.

These are the two versions of the tiller lock . The one one the left is for the remote version . I recently converted a Yamaha remote to a tiller control . Crowley Marines website helped be find the exact parts I needed . Very knowledgeable and friendly staff

I was a Tohatsu dealer and manuals were the same. Please provide evidence to that effect Tohatsu also made engines for Nissan and Mariner.

Yamaha power head on mercury lower.
This was common on early mercury 4 stroke engines. I work on a lot of the bigger 90 and 125hp yama/mercs.

Lower appears the same as my 1997 8.0 Mariner. I have not looked into it deeper.
