MANILA — A Manila woman’s four-year devotional practice was reclassified this week after the Buddha statue on her home altar was identified as a 3D-printed replica of Shrek, the animated ogre. The woman, who has not been named, lit incense and prayed daily to the DreamWorks character without incident until a friend suggested the figure’s green complexion and distinctive ears did not exactly conform to standard Buddhist iconography.
She found him in a local shop sometime in 2021. She interpreted the green coloring as a stylistic variation, possibly influenced by jade, because jade buddhas are a thing. She installed it on her household altar, established a daily practice of incense and prayer, and devoted four years of sincere devotion to a character whose canonical religious affiliation is “none” but whose message of self-acceptance has been called “vaguely Buddhist” by no one with actual credentials.
The deception began to unravel only when a visiting friend noted that the Buddha is not typically rendered as a swamp-dwelling animated character with antenna-like ears and a visible overbite. Rather than experiencing a crisis of faith, the woman laughed and announced that sincere prayer transcends its target. She told local media that the purity of one’s intentions matters more than whether the object of worship was specifically a swamp-dwelling cartoon character with questionable hygiene.
The woman has since confirmed she will continue praying to the Shrek figure, citing their established relationship and noting that the ogre had answered as many prayers as any other household deity, statistically speaking.
I sincerely doubt the Buddha himself was offended, but then, I've never known the Buddha personally. However, it does look like the Shrek Buddha enjoys sailing, so there is good reason to stand by him too.

Ya be careful with that. just last week I was severely scolded and told if I post another photo with nudity, on another site I frequent, that I would be banished from the site. the "photo" was a meme which included Winnie the Pooh and Eeyore, who of course wear no cloths. my protest was declined so I'm guessing the whole complaint came from an AI bot that couldn't tell the difference.. sheeze
Let me clear this up. The only time I’m aware of that Kermit appeared nude in The Muppet Show was in Season 4 Episode 2. Crystal Gayle was the guest star. Kermit had invited the Prairie Dog Glee Club to perform. They were a wonderful singing group but stole durn near everything including Kermit’s collar! That brief flash of nudity has remained burned in my mind ever since. He found a boa to wear the rest of the show and even briefly wore a barrel. It’s not easy being green.
