Has anyone changed the pull rope on a Tohatsu 6?

Daydream's motor is almost nine years old. And I'd rather learn how to do this on a cool sunny afternoon in my back yard, rather than at the worst imaginable time when the thing decides to break.

The manual makes no mention of it at all. YouTube is coming up empty.

Is it just that easy?

That is so cool.... just don't misplace your shoes... but then I wouldn't be surprised to see some tik tok crazy do it barefoot.

I never would have thought that would work! But I carry starting fluid on every boat I own, and I'd definitely try that before calling the tow boat!!
I'd only try it with a more substantial pair of kicks than those Crocs.

I think it'd be easier to wrap a piece of line around the fly wheel and pull. All of the 25 hp motors we buy are electric start but come with a spare pull line have never had to use one. Those cords end up as a tether for coiled up 10gauge extension cords or shore power cords.

I've changed lots of the pull ropes on lawnmowers and stuff but cannot remember ever doing one on an out-board motor. A spare handle and piece of cord is probably a good thing on the boat as a spare.

Not to jinx you but be sure to report back and tell us how easy it was to change out.

same procedure as any small engine. I owned an outdoor power equipment business for 31 years so I may have installed somewhat more than a few thousand ropes :what:.
First rule is always DO NOT REMOVE THE PULLEY OR SPRING from the housing. I will charge you double if you bring it to me in an "exploded view".

remove starter from motor
pull rope out to full extension
hold rope from retracting and cut at the handle
Remove rope from pulley
measure old rope and creat a new one of the same length
tie stopper knot in one end of rope and melt the other end to form into a point. set aside
wind pulley correct dirrection to put tension on spring until spring is wound tight
back off pulley one to one+half full turns
wile holding pulley insert rope into pulley and feed through eyelet in housing
tie a slip knot to hold wile you reinstall handle
pull handle to release slip knot and test starter action.
pat yourself on the back for not removing spring ;)

biggest mistake people make is winding the spring too tight or too long rope (same result). when the rope is pulled to full extension the return spring should not be wound tight. you want to come to the end of the rope before the spring is wound tight or you risk breaking the spring. otherwise..... ya... it really is that simple (after the first few thousand).

Thanks, that'll get me through it, I'm sure.

I probably won't get around to doing this until after New Years'. Especially now that I know the secret foot-start method.

Worked with someone who lost some toes in a lawn mower accident (don't mow in flip-flops). I don't think I'd want to get anywhere near it even with steel toe work boots.

Had to remove a tow rope from the prop of a cabin cruiser once while floating off the stern in the middle of a lake -- I made my uncle turn the blower off and took the key. Didn't take it into the water with me, but physically took it out of the ignition and moved it to the other side of the boat. I trusted him, but I really didn't want to loose my fingers, legs or arms.

People do silly stuff sometimes. It's bad enough I have to deal with the consequences of my silly stuff. I don't want to deal with the consequences of someone else's.
