Maybe it’s me but I have no clue what you are describing.
If he’s talking about the same Gray Enterprises portlites I have in my ‘82 H30, there’s a spring in one of the hinges that holds the portlite up when open. It works better on the smaller size portlites than the larger ones. There’s a wing nut on one of the hinges, I think it’s the one with the spring, but I’ve never removed it or the spring and my boat’s tucked away in winter storage now, so I can’t be much help.
I don’t know why you would want to remove it unless it’s broken. The guys at the SBO store where I bought my replacement portlites are quite knowledgeable. I might start with a call to them because I believe they sell replacement parts as well as whole units and this spring would be part of that assembly.

No, no, no. It's not just you.

The idea here is to keep us guessing as to what make of opening porthole the owner has on his boat. Maybe one should warm up on the New York Times crossword puzzle followed by a few other mind benders before tackling a problem like this.

The only thing I can assure you of is, "Given that we have no idea of the boat's age, Hunter has changed the supplier of their ports and hatches at least once during this time." For that matter, I have both Lewmar AND Bomar ports on my boat from original construction. Maybe the OP's boat has had its ports replaced at some time.

I'll show a photo of the portlight spring.
how can I remove and reinsert the torsion spring on the port lights on my Hunter 37c?
I'll attach a photo.

Yep! That's the ones. Gray Enterprises. Good idea contacting SBO.
Thanks. I tried to post a photo but couldn't figure out how to do it.
