2QM20 YP-7M gearbox lubrication question

Earlier I made a reply to a previous YP-7M post and added a question of my own. I realise it would have been more appropriate to start a new topic. Here it is.
Couple years ago I had to refurbish the forward snd reverse friction plates in my YP-7M gearbox. While at it I replaced bearings. When completing my voyage to Victoria from Port Stephens I noticed the shifter cover was getting very hot; so hot that the nearby oil dip stick fell out of the plastic cap it was attached to.
Back in Vic, I pulled engine and gearbox out for a complete overhaul.
Under the shifter cover is where the forward/reverse lever pushes a U-shaped bronze bush against a steel bobbin which in turn moves the shifter shaft.
In this case the bronze bush was badly worn. It wasn’t worn when I reassembled the gearbox prior to the trip. I concluded that it was a lubrication failure.
I studied the manual but am struggling to see any active form of lubrication to the bronze bush. The original bush showed no evidence of being a pre-oiled sintered bronze unit.

My best guess is that when I replaced the bearings with new ones, they had dust seals and that this prevented an oil mist from passing from the main gear housing and through the bearing into the shifter box and onto the bronze bush.
Can any forum member give me an authoritative explanation for how the lubrication actually works?

Not very familiar with that gear and I can’t seem to find a diagram of it. Typically, the selector slides/forks are splash lined by the gears throwing the oil up all over inside the box. There are warnings about how sensitive the adjustment for the shift mechanism is to keep it from constantly rubbing.. That may be a place to look.

Hey Kloudie, thanks for reply.
The main gearbox lubrication is splash method. The shifter mechanism is in a small housing bolted to the back of the YP-7M gear/clutch housing. The only way I can see for oil to get in there is either, if the shifter housing is filled with oil during assembly or via the gaps between balls in the bearing during operation. If the pre-fill option is used, the oil will drain back into the main gear case and leave the shifter mechanism effectively dry. This is where the mystery is for me....

I see what ya mean.. You may be on to the answer with the dust seal observation.. The seals/shields are not very hard to remove.. or new open bearings.. Kind of a tough lesson.. The later gears have the shifter in the middle of the gearbox, fully exposed to the splashing oil.. I am surprised to see that little, almost isolated shifter case ..
