Hunter 170 spinnaker install

Hunter 170 Saint Cloud
I recently purchased a 2003 Hunter 170. I know these boats are notorious for cracking in the hull bc of the use of acp instead of fiberglass, but its in great shape and has no cracks in the hull and I got a great deal. It came with about 50% of the spinnaker kit and I am considering purchasing the rest of the kit and installing the hardware so I can have more fun and fly the kite. However, I am concerned that if I start drilling into the hull, it may weaken the hull and result in the dreaded acp cracks, so I’m just not sure if it’s worth the risk. Wanted to see if anyone had any experienced installing all the spinnaker blocks and hardware on acp hull for any insight and suggestions.

Welcome to the SBO forums. Glad to have you here.
One thing about ACP boats. If you keep them in the garage they will not break or crack the hull as long as the plastic is not exposed to UV radiation. But of course, you will not be able to enjoy the reason the boat was designed and built.

It is not enough fun to simply glide along on a light wind day, you desire more of the boat. It is your boat and there are ways to improve the boat to provide more fun. Build and add a spinnaker rig.

Since fun is a fleeting emotion and taking the boat out on the water creates a risk, it seems you are at the crossroads of a dilemma.

For me, I would cheerfully enjoy the thought, I got a great deal. Taking the boat out of the garage (like spending money that is saved in the bank) and having fun on the water is a no-brainer. I'm only young once. Putting my own spinnaker on a 17ft boat (did that).

What a great idea.

Nike coined a marketing phrase that has overcome the fears of many.

"Just Do It".
