sail number on brochure matches my boat but....

hello. I am trying to figure this out. maybe some one out there can help me get to the bottom of this. i have a 1978 catalina 22 with a hull #82xx on the exterior-starboard transom. the interior transom plate has a
serial #10022 (maybe 1981)with matching sail, just like the one in the brochure. the sail i have does not match the one from the brochure, but looks similar. any information would be greatly appreciated thank you.

I infer from your post that you are not the original owner. Is this assumption correct? If so, the next question is - does the color scheme on the brochure match your boat? If that is the case, then the logical assumption is that the original sails were replaced at some point in time and you have the privilege of owning a "show boat". That for sure, is a great story to tell all of your friends, sailing guests and dockside neighbors. For reference, your current sail has a reef point and the sail in the brochure does not. While I have yet to bend on my new sails on Waffle House (an '88 New Design) the sails that came with her sure don't look as crisp as your current sails. The old sails are still functional but one day I will retire them and bend on the new sails.

The mystery deepens. The other letters on the transom refer to the date and year of the build. Having said that, you have a beautiful boat. She looks in great shape. I did notice from your photos that your boom vang is incorrectly mounted. It is attached too high on the mast and it's attachment point should be relocated lower on the mast to just above deck level. That position will allow the vang to exert the force necessary to flatten the sail in heavy air.

CTYH 8279 M78F this is what is etched on the back of the transom(and title). i just repainted above the water line on the hull. when i sanded it down they were visible. now its impossible to see under the paint.

previous owner had the vang mounted in that position so he could sail on the lake with the pop top up, but I am not going to do that. It would be wise to relocate to the proper position and keep the top secure, Thank you.

For reference, your current sail has a reef point and the sail in the brochure does not.

Look again, there are reef points on the sail in the brochure.

The Hull Identification Number (HIN) is: CTYH 8279 M78F. This is the official number molded into the hull when the hull was built and is required by law. The metal plate is not required by law and may be something Catalina added for whatever reason.

We'll probably never know for sure how that plate came to be attached to your hull. My guess is a prior owner owned #1010 and the hull was damaged beyond repair. He took the sail and the plate from the boat and installed the plate on this boat and used #1010. If he was racing, then some regattas and organizations require the sail number to match the hull number.
