Looking for a sailboat junk/salvage yard

There is one just a few miles from me (Lynden, WA) SAILBOAT WRECKING YARD – REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE. For some reason, we have never gone there. There is a notification on their site that they lack the staffing to respond to remote requests. So, it's not much use if you're not in the area.

However, I could probably be talked into going there, if you knew what you were looking for.

In fact, if there were a few people looking for stuff, I wouldn't mind going there and doing a Zoom meeting or something so that folks could shop remotely. Could be kind of fun.

Thank you for your offer. I have reached out to to them to see if they have the boat there
that I need a part off off.

Let see how that shakes out.

The part is a reasonably shippable size.

Thanks Foswick,

They got back to me and they do not have the boat model I need the part for but
they looked into it.

It's boat specific.

The polycarbonate or acrylic companionway slide hatch for the 1982 Hunter 33.

Making one involves bending 1/2" thick material so finding one would be real nice.

If you did find it, it would likely be cracked and guaranteed to be crazed.... Did you ask your local plastics shop if they could make it and bend the acrylic?

If it's just a very slight and constant curvature... it's something almost anyone can tackle. Buy a few small scraps to practice. I wouldn't use polycarbonate for this application.

Acrylic (Plexiglass is a type of acrylic) is far superior in terms of UV and scratch resistance.... In the typical thicknesses use, impact resistance is not a concern. You can also flame polish the cut (or routered) edge of acrylic.

I kind of thought that may be your answer. It is no longer the case. A number of years ago that was true. But the modern formulations of UV scratch resistant polycarbonate are far superior to what they used to be. As far as practical direct knowledge, I'm still watching. However I did use polycarbonate on a boat I redid about 10 or 15 years ago and it still looks new. I also did my hatches in polycarbonate a couple years ago on my current boat and they still look brand new. Those have now spent a fair amount of time in the tropics, have traveled quite a distance under sometimes extreme conditions.

It is true you can flame the edges. I've never needed that but that is a good point. You could also polish polycarbonate.

On a sliding hatch cover, depends on where you are sailing. Since I'm in the ocean more than a lot of folk, I want the added strength of polycarbonate for any area that could be hit by a breaking wave. Don't know if you have ever experienced that - but think a thousand pound sledge hammer smashing into your hatch...

Far superior to both acryllic and polycarbonate for UV and scratch resistance, I learned about a better option from this documentary series:
