Raritan Seara bowl fills with water

Hi everyone, I have a 3-month-old Raritan sea era toilet which worked perfectly for about a month. Lately the toilet bowl filles way too high with water and doesn't flush properly because of the excess water. The only way around this is to take a cup and remove some water from the bowl. Does anyone have a suggestion. Thanks

If the sea water version, install a vented loop in the intake line. 'Twould be best if you can put it between the pump/motor assembly and the bowl...if not, between the intake thru-hull and the pump/motor assembly. It needs to be at least 6-8" above waterline AT MAX HEEL, which on most sailboats puts it 2-3 FEET above the bowl.
This will prevent water from rising in the bowl as sea water OUTside the boat seeks its own level INside the boat via the toilet bowl when the intake thru-hull is open..and will save you from yourself if you forget to close it when you leave the boat.

If you have the fresh water version, give Raritan tech support a call Monday morning.

Hi Peggie,

I was on my boat today and it has a vent loop which is about 3.5 feet above the bowl. i can hear hissing sound when i flush from the vent loop. When i remove some water, it flushes perfectly for the next 2 or 3 flushes and then slowly the bowl fills with water and from that point it does not flush all the contents properly.

Any ideas of what i should be looking for? Thanks for your help.

You shouldn't hear any hissing from a vented loop in the INTAKE line through which water is being pulled by the pump, only from one in the DISCHARGE line through which water is being PUSHED...which you'd only need if you're flushing directly overboard. Easy to determine where it is by the size: discharge line is 1" or 1.5"...flush water intake line is 3/4"

I had the same problem with my h380 before I changed the discharge line. The original discharge line has a long poorly routed run to the holding tank (which is well above the toilet and about 12' away), and relies on the backflow preventer in the discharge line at the pump to keep the contents in the discharge line from flowing back into the bowl. The plumbing in my boat has a vented loop between the pump and the bowl, and not between the pump and the seawater intake (which I don't think would work anyway). You can see the brief description I posted under Hunter owners Big Boats on 20 July 2024.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Jan_H i will look into your comments. Thanks

Spoke to Raritan support today and they said to shut off the intake valve and see if water is still entering the bowl. Drying the bowl edge and placing a piece of there. Also to check if there was enough power to the motor during discharge to rule out not enough force for a proper flush. He also mentioned i should service the vented loop.

Pardon the segue, but how often does a "vented loop" need servicing? On the discharge side it seems like a replacement project rather than "servicing" due to the nature of the contents. (?)

There should be an air valve (almost always sold separately from the loop and with rarely any guidance from marine store employees alerting you that one is needed) installed in the nipple at the top of the loop. It prevents material passing through the loop in a discharge line from squirting out the hole in the top and also closes to allow flush water to be pumped into the bowl. It's the air valve that needs occasional cleaning and/or replacing. Because boat owners rarely get any guidance that they need valve, they put a "discharge" line--approx 1/4"--on the nipple at the top of the loop.that should go to its own thru-hull (teeing it into the holding tank vent line is a very bad idea because the squirting can clog it). And because it is such a small diameter line, it clogs...turning the vented loop into an UNvented loop that no longer has any ability to break a siphon.
