Ahoy mateys!! I recently purchased a 1970s Javelin 14 so that when summer comes around I can get on the water and enjoy the outdoors once more! I have a question about mast-stepping since I have never done it before, and if I'm honest, the setup on this Javelin seems sketchy to say the least. I've seen other boats with tabernackles that have 2 metal plates that have 2 pins (first to hinge during stepping, 2nd to lock in place?). Attached are photos of the tabernackle, and it doesn't *seem* to have any pin to go through the male/female parts to hold them together, just an aluminum pin that APPEARS to fit into the slot in the mast to help while stepping the mast? ...so my question is...is the only thing holding the mast the forestay and the shrouds? Looking for some guidance, thanks in advance!

On our Soling there was no pin to hold the mast down - just its own weight and the stays and shrouds. We had no problems with it, and we torqued the mast a lot - the forestay, backstay and shrouds were all adjustable while sailing. The flanges you have on the step look like they should keep the mast well seated. Just make sure the standing rigging is good.
Yeah it has a forestay and 2 shrouds (1 port, 1 starboard) but is that all that's needed for the mast to be secure? Ive seen other tabernackles that have a plate with 2 pins that go through them and mine seems less secure than those ones...just want to make sure before I step the mast for the first time
Okay awesome thank you so much! Yeah the standing rigging looks good, the shrouds are new, I just need to buy new spreaders and I'll be ready to hit the water!
