P42 engine sump

So I have the normal stuffing box and it drips a few drops a minute as it is supposed to. However the area under the stuffing box slowly fills up and then drains over the lip into the large area under the engine. I have been researching and I know that the main engine sump does not have drains so that it can contain oil/fuel/etc. But i thought the area under the stuffing box is supposed to drain. I have looked for holes/drains thinking it must be clogged but there just isn't one. In a previous post (which i am unable to find now) I thought I saw a pic showing drains on each side in the forward part of the stuffing box sump area. Anyone had an issue with this? Anyone have a pic of the drains? Manually pumping this area is becoming an annoyance. We are on the ICW heading south so mostly motoring. Thanks. Jim

on our 41 there are limber holes on each side of the pan under the stuffing box. I wonder if they were never drilled out during manufacturing?

That is sort of what I am thinking but it just seems weird to me that the previous owners of the boat didn't notice over 28 years and 1600 engine hours...

I am at a marina for the day in Hilton Head SC. I'm going to pump out and clean the area and take some pics. I'd really like to know if they are just drain holes or drains with a hose or something and their location.

Well I drained it and cleaned it out. There are definitely no drains. Also emailed the previous owner and he confirmed that he would just manually empty it as needed. Maybe they added drains in the later years. Mine is a 96

That area under the stuffing box on our 1991 boat must have limber holes, since our box drips end up in the main bilge. Never paid much attention, but will check the next time to the boat. The main area under the engine does not have limber holes, but is there to collect any engine fluids for proper disposal.

I would definitely appreciate that. I have searched and searched. I can't find a drain or limber holes or anything.

No drain holes for my C36. I cut side of a large plastic bottle creating a deep tray that is wedge shape and is long enough to reach from the bottom of log hose to underside of the transmission, about 10 inches. It catches the drips. I empty the tray using a srynge. There is never water in the engine bilge unless I do not show up for more than 30 days. That has never happens.

The shaft bilge on my O’Day 322 would also flow into my engine pan. I put a shallow plastic bowl under the stuffing box. Then I tried a sponge…all to try and keep water out of the engine pan.

Finally switched to a Volvo dripless seal…a game changer. Now I never have water under the engine.
