Water leaking from cockpit some at binnacle

Has anyone had issues with water entering the base of the binnacle and then leaking down the steering gear and forward into the quarter berth? I've got an 81 Catalina 30 and anytime I wash out the cockpit or it rains I get water in the quarter berth. How difficult is it to unscrew the binnacle base? Any assistance would be appreciated.
Also any recommendations besides zincs if your prop is getting electrolysis? My boats in a marina so there could be stray current from other boats. Thank you for your time!

It's coming in under the pedestal? Then it needs rebedding. Pretty involved job, you have to disconnect the steering cables (and engine cables if they go through there), then remove the bolts. Water could be leaking in at the compass too, that would be much easier to fix.

I would think you should be able to loosen the pedestal bolts and lift the place butyl tape. I may be wrong, since I have never tried it though.

The disconnecting of the steering cables is what I would be worried about. I imagine I would only need to lift it about an inch to get some butyl tape under there. Has anyone done this prior? Thanks for all the responses!

If it is a pull pull setup like mine you should just have to loosen the adjustment on the cables where they attach the the rudder wheel below

You can unbolt and lay it back without unhooking any cables.

HVBaker,
When you unbolt it and lift it up, how will it not need to disconnect from the gearing? Have you done it? Thank you

Yes, I have done it. Unbolt. Bang bolts out from below. May need socket extension to push bolts up and out from below. Chain that runs over sprocket connects to wire rope that pass over turning sheaves and extend back to the quadrant. The binnacle will lay forward. If you go to the Edson website you can find drawings of the internals. Good luck.

Illustration 4 is most like the Catalina 30 implementation.

OP, how did this work out for you? I also have leakage under the pedestal base and was thinking of getting some butyl under it.
