Recently we have received reports of scam attempts by members of our community.

The scam works this way:
  1. Legitimate member posts he is looking for a piece of gear or boat part.
  2. Legitimate member receives a vaguely worded private message to contact xxxxx@xxx.com as he has the part.
  3. Legitimate member emails the contact who then requests payment.
  4. There is no business address, or business name listed on the email.
If you should receive a Private Message along these lines, use the report button and report to the moderators. All reports are held in confidence.

The matter will be investigated and if it is a scam the offending member will be banned.

SBO does screen new member registrations, however, clever scammers can get around the screening system.

A Nigerian prince has offered me a large sum of money and just needs my bank account number. He said he would do the same for you guys too!

I heard about a Nigerian prince that passed away. When they were going through his house, they found a room filled with gold. Apparently he had spent years trying to give it away but nobody would take it... ;)

Back when offers from Nigerian princes came in the US Mail, I decided to have some fun and put it on the board meeting agenda as an "exciting business proposal" ;-). We decided to pass on it.
