Does anyone know how the stanchions on the mk3 are mounted? Are they through bolted or is there an embedded plate?

There are two screws into the deck. I don't really know if there is a bedding plate there. I doubt it but do not know. Most of the support comes from a large bolt coming out of the base of the stanchion through the toe rail. It's accessed by removing trim below the deck. This on Hull 6444, 2001 year model.
That's thru bolted, at least in this area. I wouldn't be surprise if Catalina just drilled right into the deck for the other two. I was shocked to find lag bolts for the bow pulpit

That may be a former owner's refit. The bow pulpit is one of the first parts on many boats to get damaged and rebuilt by owners.
I thought the same until I discovered that there was no through hole on the underside of the deck. It's a steep angle for the railing so getting anything longer than 1 or 1-1/4" would be impossible from above. I ended up installing from below with nuts on top. Not as clean of a look but much stronger.
