Just completing a 10-day visit of western MI and western OH with much exposure to eastern Lake Michigan and eastern Lake Erie between Toledo and Sandusky. I’ve gained appreciation of some aspects of boating on the Great Lakes, and certainly much of its history. Waiting now for the Miller Ferry to take me back across from Put-in-Bay, South Bass Island, to Catawaba. Great Place!

USS Brig Niagara. Perry’s ship that led the defeat of the British at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813.

Is this your first time on the Great Lakes?

The only Great Lake I haven't sailed in is Superior - and i dearly want to sail the North Channel, been close in the Georgian Bay but not close enough LOL.

The Great Lakes pose their own challenges and the different lakes are, well, different... I wish these beautiful lakes were located further south so sailing on them could be 10 or 12 months out of the year; but then they would loose their raw beauty as they would be overrun with boaters....

I do not recall ever having had actually boated on any of the Great Lakes prior, although I’ve visited MI, WI, and OH previously. I’ve also visited the Falls. The passage between Put-In-Bay @ South Bass Island and the Ohio shore is very short but scenic. So, I got a sense of the place; very enticing. My friends there in Saugatuck once owned a 32-ft Tiara for a few years and traveled about Lake Michigan. So, I got some insight on Lake boating from them. There were a couple of SCAs across Lake Michigan during the few October days I visited there. The wind waves arriving to the shoreline resembled those of the Gulf coast of FL in westerly winds. The two coastlines/beaches have similar dynamics and appearances.
