Hello all,
new sailor upgraded from DS3 to Oday 22'. I'm in a whole new category now and I need your help. I got this boat about 2 weeks ago. Apparently this boat has been sitting for years. The registration sticker is for 2009, so I guess it's been sitting that long. There is water in the bilge. I accessed to water through this little hole near the companionway using a wet vac to get about 5 gallons out (by the way, is that why that whole is there?) I see many people have installed a pump. I'm hoping it's rain water and there are no leaks. It's gonna be hard to determine until I get all the water out.

please offer your thoughts.

Most older boats will leak. It's more likely that the leaks are from above the waterline. Can you take a few more pics? I'm guessing there's better bilge access somewhere else in the boat

1. A hose running beneath the cabinet/sink. I think it is a supply line but I don't know from where. It runs forward frome there beneath the head/toilet and under the v-berth.

2. Black cylinder beneath the cockpit. Wire runs from there but I haven't found the end.

3. Starboard aft. It appears to be a place for the battery under the seating in the cockpit. I still have to follow the wires. They all seem to have been pulled out so I don't know where they go.

I have the same issue with my bilge. I'm using a shopvac, but some people hve told me they installed a small pump. I'm just not sure where to run the discharge so I'll probably just keep an eye on it and use the vac.

Ox_inthewild, I agree with your strategy.The lake I will be sailing requires an inspection. If there is any water in the bilge, I’m disqualified for a week. I have to be vigilant. I’ll put a pump on eventually. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Thats insane. If they did inspections after every storm, they'd be out of business

My Oday 22 didn't have any through hull fittings, so all water had to be from topside. I did have a sink with a water tank in the starboard cockpit locker. It also had an actual bilge on the centerline...not sure what is up with the whole you have to pump from...

A few months later, and I've purchased a cheap 1973 O'Day 22. Also has water in the bilge (mine needs a new front hatch at least). You've probably figured this out, and moved on to other issues by now, but I did just find a flickr post from someone here long ago with scans of an original O'Day 22 owner's manual. One of the pages actually mentions that hole in the cabin sole near the companion way. Yes, it is for pumping the bilge (as well as for pouring molten lead into the keel for those wishing to add a couple hundred pounds of weight- wow). Link to the manual:
